A New Milestone at St. Paul's Hospital Millennium Medical College
The Department of Dental and Maxillofacial Surgery at St. Paul's Hospital Millennium Medical College (SPHMMC) is proud to announce the successful launch of orthognathic (jaw correction) surgery and the expansion of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery services.
We have successfully completed two orthognathic procedures, including a bimaxillary (upper and lower jaw) surgery yesterday. This marks a significant milestone for both our department and Ethiopia's public healthcare system, expanding access to advanced corrective jaw surgery and dental care in a public hospital.
The service is being led by Dr. Shimelis Megersa, Honorary Assistant Professor, and Dr. Addis Kassahun, Head of the Department, with the support of a dedicated multidisciplinary team, including residents, our orthodontist, our dental lab technician, the anesthesia team, and the nursing team.
Orthognathic surgery is intended for patients with severe jaw misalignment that cannot be corrected with braces alone. It improves chewing, speech, facial balance, and, in selected patients, breathing (Sleep apnea) and overall quality of life.
We remain committed to advancing specialized oral and maxillofacial surgical care and dental services, making these life-changing services more accessible.
