Could Vitamin C Help Protect Your Brain as You Age? New Imaging Study Finds a Link
As the brain ages, it naturally loses gray matter — the tissue responsible for processing information, controlling movement, and regulating emotion — while also undergoing changes to the neurons and neurotransmitters that govern how different brain regions communicate. A new study published in PLOS One adds vitamin C to the growing list of nutrients that may play a role in slowing these changes, finding that people with lower blood plasma vitamin C levels tended to have lower gray matter volume and reduced connectivity in a key brain network involved in memory and self-reflection.

A new review published in the journal Science proposes that many of the most well-established risk factors for dementia — including chronic stress, depression, cardiovascular disease, disrupted sleep, and ageing itself — may converge on a single shared mechanism: the disruption of a rhythmic, sleep-dependent process through which the brain clears toxic waste products that accumulate during waking hours. The review, authored by neuroscientist Maiken Nedergaard of the University of Rochester Medical Center, argues that understanding this process — and how it breaks down — may be fundamental to understanding why dementia develops.
