🇫🇮 Happy Finnish Food Day!
Today, September 4th, we celebrate Finnish Food Day – celebrating local, clean and responsibly produced food. 🌿
Here in Lapland, local food can be very local indeed.
Everything on this plate comes from close to home:
🫎 Moose, hunted by my partner Tomi just two days ago
🍄 Wild mushrooms, picked from our forests
🫐 Lingonberries, gathered from those same forests
🥔 Locally grown potatoes
This is something I truly appreciate about living here: we know where our food comes from. We pick berries and mushrooms, fish from our lakes, grow what we can, and hunting remains a natural part of life for many families in Lapland.
Hunting is not just about meat. It is part of our food culture, wildlife management and traditions passed down through generations. When an animal is hunted, the meat is deeply valued and carefully used.
From the forest to the table – quite literally. ❤️
Tomi hunted this moose only two days ago. Would you like to hear more about the hunt and how moose hunting works here in Finland? 🫎 Let me know in the comments – perhaps that should be our next story!
This same philosophy is also an important part of Soma Adventures. 🌿
When we cook for our guests, we want the food to have a connection to the place you are visiting. And because I’m often both your cook and your guide, I can tell you where the fish came from, who picked the berries, where we found the mushrooms – and sometimes even who hunted the meat.
So at Soma, a meal is never just a meal.
It’s a journey through the flavours, traditions and everyday life of Lapland. And perhaps one of the best ways to understand a culture is simply to sit around the same table, hear the stories – and taste it. 🇫🇮🌲
