Otto had quite the summer substitute bender 😁

35 days straight in charge of heating the smoke sauna. We’re not entirely sure he knows what to do with himself tomorrow!

The old Finnish sauna tradition carries a rich heritage of healing.

In our Sauna Healer Training, we explore how fire, water, plants, peat, honey, whisks and löyly have been used as part of Finnish sauna healing. We learn to heat the smoke sauna, work with the elements, guide rituals and give traditional sauna treatments.

The training also takes us into the songs, mythology and worldview behind these practices, because the old techniques make much more sense when you understand the tradition they grew from.

Most importantly, we learn by doing. Heating, whisking, treating, singing, guiding and spending a lot of time in the sauna together.

Our trainings in Finland are open to sauna professionals and passionate practitioners from around the world.

The difference between art and tradition is not always obvious. đŸ€”

Art invites us to create. Tradition asks us first to understand what has been handed down before deciding how to carry it forward.

Here’s Otto’s perspective on why that distinction matters.

A new Spirit of Sauna podcast episode is out! đŸŽ™ïž

We’re still out in the forests gathering herbs, branches, and other gifts of nature for the coming sauna season, but not for much longer. It felt like the perfect moment to finally release this conversation we recorded back in June.

In this episode, we explore one of the deepest questions behind the sauna tradition: our worldview.

The way we understand the fundamental nature of reality shapes everything. It influences how we relate to the body, healing, ritual, nature, and ultimately what we believe is happening in the sauna itself. Before asking how to guide someone through a sauna ritual, we should first ask what we believe the ritual can actually affect.

Traditional sauna incantations often speak of God, spirits, and unseen forces. But what do these words really mean? Are they references to supernatural beings, symbolic language, or something else entirely? The answer is far from obvious.

In this episode, we don’t shy away from these questions. Instead, we explore them openly, asking whether the oldest sauna traditions might still offer a coherent way of understanding reality, and what that could mean for the way we practice sauna today.

The forest is veeery slowly preparing for winter 🌿

These are some of the last harvesting days of the season. Right now we’re drying herbs that will become part of our smoke sauna throughout the winter.

Every plant carries its own scent and character into the löyly.

The shelves are slowly filling up. Winter will be ready when it arrives. đŸ”„

Thank you, .finnishsauna for sharing this beautiful journey with us. Just a couple of days left, but what a journey it has already been. đŸŒżđŸ”„

One thing we’ve especially appreciated is your openness and honesty. This lesson is such an important one: before a sauna healer can truly care for others, they must first learn to care for themselves.

It reminds us of the safety instructions on an airplane. Put your own oxygen mask on first, then help those around you. The same wisdom belongs in the sauna.

Daniel has developed a calm, confident, and deeply caring presence in his treatments. We have no doubt that authentic Finnish saunotus will soon find a wonderful home in Singapore.

We can’t wait to see where this path leads đŸ™đŸ»đŸ‡«đŸ‡źđŸ‡žđŸ‡Ź

Last night we welcomed June’s full moon, often known as the Strawberry Moon. For us, the full moon marks one thing above all else, the season of gathering herbs and making fresh vihtas. 🌝

People in Finland have traditionally paid close attention to the moon, and its phases were considered important in many seasonal tasks throughout the year. For us, the full moon has also become a natural time to gather herbs and prepare the birch whisks that will carry us through the winter. If the work stretches into the evening, the bright Nordic nights of June give us plenty of extra time in the forest. At the same time, the plants are at their most vigorous, rich with fragrance and aroma.

Much like strawberries, vihtas have their own short season. Some are carefully preserved for the colder months ahead, but right now we also get to enjoy fresh birch vihtas and their intoxicating fragrance in the smoke sauna. Before long, this beloved harvesting season will be over for another year.

At the same time, our saunotus retreat is in full swing, so the ritual sauna Rauni and the smoke sauna is heated every single day. Our days are spent between the forest, the löyly, and baskets filled with herbs.

So yes, life is beautifully busy. 😼‍💹

And in the middle of it all, you begin to notice a subtle change. The evenings are slowly growing darker again. Summer is at its peak, yet little by little the wheel is already turning toward autumn.

Now is the time to gather, dry, and preserve. Here’s hoping we manage to prepare enough herbs and vihtas for the long winter ahead. đŸ€žđŸŒż

After five years and more than a thousand heatings, our smoke sauna stove has been rebuilt. đŸ™đŸ»

Yesterday came the moment we had all been waiting for: the first heating and the first löyly.

Here are ’s thoughts after stepping into the sauna:

”Yesterday our master sauna heater Joonas completed the first heating after the stove rebuild.

Late in the evening I finally stepped into the sauna myself. The difference was immediate!

The fire burns cleaner, the stones heat more evenly and the löyly arrives with remarkable clarity.

I thought I knew this sauna well, then it surprised me again.

After more than a thousand heatings, I honestly didn’t believe the löyly could improve any further. And yet somehow it did. đŸ”„â€
