OVERALL CONTROL OF THE EXTRAORDINARY CHANNELS

We have discussed the Extraordinary Channels in several articles posted on this page, as well as the fundamental principles of our approach to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) based on palpation of human body tissues. We invite the reader to refer to those articles.

Here, we present an overall control of the Extraordinary Channels, which is done at the level of the greater wings of the sphenoid bone (temples).
A – Surface vertical interrogation controls the three basic levels of the Extraordinary Channels, namely:
- the master points
- the constituent points of the Extraordinary Channels
- the cephalic control points of the Extraordinary Channels
A blockage indicates at least one disturbance in these 3 levels on the same side.
B – Dermis vertical interrogation controls:
- the three basic levels (specifically done through surface vertical interrogation)
- the Ren Mai/Du Mai connection and the Chong Mai/Dai Mai connection
- the dental level in relation to the Extraordiinary Channels
A blockage indicates at least one disturbance in these levels on the same side.

Reminder:
The energy system is "embodied" in the anatomy (bones, muscles, dermis...).
3 basic levels about the Extraordinary Channels are to be considered:
a) the Extraordinary Channels as such, with their constituent points
b) the master points of the Extraordinary Channels
c) the cephalic control points of the Extraordinary Channels which are points from GB 1 to GB 9 (currently GB 13).
These 3 levels appear in particular on the hand:
a) the thumb column is in resonance with the constituent points of the Extraordinary Channels. The control is done through the transversal interrogation at the osseous level
b) the 8 inter-phalangeal joints of the fingers are in resonance with the 8 master points. The control is done through the transverse interrogation at the osseous level
c) the head and base of the last 4 metacarpals (i.e. the metacarpophalangeal and carpo-metacarpal joints of the fingers) are in resonance with the cephalic control points. The control is done through a vertical interrogation at the osseous level.
Let us take the example of Chong Mai.
- as for the constituent point level, the control is done through the transverse interrogation of the head of the first metacarpal bone
- as for the master point level (i.e. SP 4), the transverse interrogation of the distal interphalangeal joint of the index finger
- as for the cephalic control point level (i.e. GB 5), the vertical interrogation of the base of the second metacarpal bone).

These 3 basic levels are completed by a superior level: the TEETH which concern the depth of the being.
The teeth are in relation to the organs and viscera but also to the 8 Extraordinary Channels which are themselves in resonance with the endocrine glands.
The decoding is as follows:
(teeth are numbered according to the international nomenclature)
- tooth 1: Du Mai – epiphysis
- tooth 2: Yang Qiao Mai – pituitary gland
- tooth 3: Dai Mai – endocrine pancreas
- tooth 4: Yang Wei Mai – thyroid and parathyroid
- tooth 5: Yin Qiao Mai – adrenals
- tooth 6: Ren Mai – thymus
- tooth 7: Chong Mai – hypothalamus
- tooth 8: Yin Wei Mai – go**ds

The correction consists in linking the endocrine gland with the corresponding tooth.

In the case of diabetes, the therapist must also control the connection between the Chong Mai and the Dai Mai.

SPECIAL POINTS

Through palpation and research, new points have been identified that are not listed in the general point nomenclature and are associated with specific energy imbalances. These “special” points are called MG points. Twenty such points have been identified. Each point is specifically controlled and corrected.

Let’s take MG 4 point as an example.

We note that phase III of disease—the phase of toxin deposition—associated with the Shao Yang layer (GB-TW), is characterized by the formation of benign tumors (cysts, nodules, stones, warts, etc.). Encystment is a protective mechanism of the body to isolate a lesion or a foreign body that it cannot eliminate. In a previous post, we studied the Stomach meridian, from ST 11 to ST 30, to treat energy stagnations that can manifest in the tissues as benign tumors.
Here we propose a different approach, one not described in the Tradition.

I – OVERALL CONTROL
For MG 4, the control is done through the dermis transverse interrogation on the lateral aspect of the costal margin (photo 1). The blocked side indicates the side of the cystic lesion. MG 4, located midway between the anterior tibial tuberosity and the edge of the medial tibial plateau—the location of point SP 9—is closed.

II – CORRECTION
The therapist places one hand on point MG 4 and, with the other, first looks for a “rope” between both hands along the lateral side of the body, which indicates the level of the lesion, then covers the horizontal band on the front or back of the hemibody passing through the point on the lateral side of the body, to find the correction zone, which is also the zone of the lesion (photo 2). The correction also releases the blockage on the somatic chain of the Stomach.

THE KD 1 POINT: “THE CONNECTION TO THE GROUND”

The KD 1 point, Yong Quan is the lowest point of the body, it is the only one located at the sole of the foot.
It allows to be anchored to the earth, to take root.

The closed KD 1 point indicates there is a loss of contact with the earth. The person may experience difficulties to live in the present, in the real. He/she cannot get out his thoughts, out of his imagination.

We detail below the controls and correction for therapists using our method.

I – OVERALL CONTROL
It is done through a surface transverse interrogation of the greater wing of the Sphenoid (temple) (photo 1).
Confirmation by a surface transverse interrogation on the dorsal face of the distal interphalangeal of the middle finger (photo 2).
The KD 1 point on the same side is closed

II- SEARCH FOR THE DISTURBED ELEMENT
The loss contact with the earth can affect particularly one Element. The search is done through a transverse interrogation of the ulna with three fingers above the radial pulses, respecting the traditional Elements’ positions (photo 3).

III- CORRECTION
The therapist puts one hand on KD 1 and, with the other, looks for a "rope" between both hands, first on the Earth point of the organ in the disturbed Element, which begins opening KD 1, then in an area below the navel, in the Lower Burner (that corresponds to the Hara in the Japanese tradition and the Lower Dan Tian in the Daoist tradition) (photo 4), which finishes opening KD 1.

TRAUMATIC BLOCKAGES OF THE UPPER CERVICAL SPINE

Here we review the study already published about Occiput-C1-C2 blockages that occur following a fall, direct or indirect impact such as whiplash, sudden movement, or poor posture. They are also common in newborns in cases of difficult childbirth. They can cause neck pain and stiffness as well as headaches, dizziness, impaired vision, and organic disorders—digestive and cardiac troubles—related to neurovegetative dysfunction (vagus nerve).

As already mentioned, these blockages affect the T4-T5 mechanical centre.

The correction is done from the traumatic centre of the ankle. Using 1 hand, the therapist transversely interrogates the entire perimeter of the ankle, on the surface, looking for a stuck area (most often, it is located close to the medial malleolus). He keeps one hand on this area while the other one goes down the lateral side of the body. It indicates the height of the blockage in the body. In this case, the therapist finds an area in front of the mastoid process of the Temporal bone (photo 1).

Several areas – very close – in the centre of the ankle are usually found because the trauma affects several muscles (see photo 2). This corrects C0-C1 and C1-C2 blockages.

The therapist also has to control the Window of the Sky points, particularly those in the upper stripe (DM 16, GB 20, UB 10...) which can disturb the energy movement of the occiput (flexion/extension). The controls and corrections are summarised in photo 3.

This technique allows complete liberation of the upper cervical spine in a very soft way, without manipulation, even in the acute phase.

It should be noted that blockages of this vertebral region, like the others, may have origins other than traumatic (organic, endocrine, malocclusion, emotional stress, etc.). They are then treated specifically according to the causes.

THE DISTURBANCES IN THE IMMUNE AND LYMPHATIC SYSTEM

The immune system consists of the tonsils, spleen, thymus, mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT), lymph nodes, and lymphatic vessels. It protects the body from pathogens, viruses, bacteria, and tumor cells

There are three types of immune system disorders:
- immune deficiency, related to the spleen/thymus function on the energetic plane
- allergies, related to the liver
- autoimmunity, related to the intestines

These disorders can be innate (concept of constitution) or acquired.

The therapeutic levels related to constitution are:
- the outer pathway of the Bladder channel
- teeth
- specific corrections for miasma described by Hahnemann (psora, sycose, luese).

In cases of acquired disturbances, it is essential to determine where and how the external agent (virus, bacteria, etc.) disrupted the energy system.

The lymphatic network consists of lymphatic vessels, lymph nodes, and collecting trunks. It has two main functions:
- it drains fluid accumulations in the tissues and eliminates waste products (all lymph passes through and is filtered in the lymph nodes). In terms of energy, this function is assured by the Triple Warmer and the Spleen, assisted by the Liver. Some of the controls and corrections have been studied in previous publications. We propose a specific method of lymph drainage which will be the subject of forthcoming articles.
- it has a key role in immune defence.

We should also highlight the role of diet and the psyche (the importance of the different emotional chains and Extraordinary Channels) in the proper functioning of the immune system.

TRIPLE WARMER AND CISTERNA CHYLI IN LYMPHATIC DISORDERS

The Triple Warmer has an irrigating function. It regulates the circulation of water (fluids) throughout the body and helps the Spleen to drain dampness.

Spleen and Triple Warmer disturbances are common in lymphatic circulatory problems.

OVERALL CONTROL OF THE TW DRAINAGE FUNCTION

Several possibilities, including:

Dermis transverse interrogation on the base of the 3rd metatarsal bone (photo 1)

CORRECTION

The therapist palpates through a surface vertical interrogation the TW points on the side blocked in the overall control and looks for the point which does not respond (TW 1, TW 2, TW 3 points are frequent).

He/she puts one hand on this point and with the other one looks for an area located slightly above and to the left of the umbilicus and connected to that point (photo 2). This area is located facing the cisterna chyli

Note:

The cisterna chyli is a dilated sac which receives lymph from the 2 lower limbs through both the right and left lumbar trunks and abdomen through the intestinal trunk. It is anterior to the bodies of L1 – L2 vertebrae, and the origin of the thoracic duct which goes up anterior to the bodies of thoracic vertebrae and receives lymph from the left side of thorax, then the left upper limb, the left side of the head and neck and ends at the junction of the left jugular and subclavian veins. The right lymphatic duct receives lymph from the right side of thorax, the right upper limb and the right side of head and neck, and ends at the junction of the right jugular and subclavian veins.

Observation has shown that even in lymphatic problems in the right upper limb, that correction often needs to be made. It creates a “suction effect”, like a pump, on the entire lymphatic network. It should be noted that Emile Vodder, in his manual lymphatic drainage technique, attached importance to the cisterna chyli.

The technique described above is the first step in an energy treatment aimed at draining lymph throughout the body. Another step is related to the Great Luo of Spleen, Da Bao. Nearly 80% of the lymphatic system is superficial and can be compared to a net surrounding the body, like Da Bao on the energy level. We will examine in detail Da Bao, the full treatment of drainage and the immune function of the lymphatic system in forthcoming publications.

THE FUNDAMENTAL PRINCIPLES OF TRADITIONAL CHINESE MEDICINE ACCORDING TO THE GEOMETRICAL METHOD

Diagnosis in Traditional Chinese Medicine is based mainly on questioning, inspection of the tongue, complexion, nails, and pulse taking. From these elements, the interpretation of which is not entirely free from subjectivity, the therapist chooses to puncture certain points with needles, heat them, massage them, or even use cupping. However, the energy system is so complex that there may be a gap between the therapist's intellectual approach and the patient's actual energy state.

Our approach to Chinese medicine is entirely MANUAL, without needles, moxa, or pharmacopoeia. It is based on SPECIFIC PALPATION of points, meridians, and tissues of the human body in resonance with the energy system.

The ancient Chinese have described the energy system, but not how it materializes in the anatomy (bones, muscles, skin, viscera). Palpation of points, channels and tissues is an element of diagnosis as important as the examination of pulses and tongue or the questioning of the patient. It is too often neglected. Japanese acupuncture has particularly developed diagnosis by palpation – there is a tradition of blind acupuncturists and shiatsu practitioners in Japan. Energy should not be a vague concept that is difficult to grasp, BUT A REALITY THAT CAN BE TOUCHED WITH FINGERS.

The reading grid of tissues is a set of manual controls, each related to a specific therapeutic level. To “read” tissues, the therapist needs to know HOW TO PALPATE (active interrogation of tissues) and WHERE TO PALPATE (disturbances in the energy system are inscribed in a SPECIFIC way in the tissues – skin, muscles, bones, organs). Many examples have been given in previous publications.

Through the reading grid the therapist can determine where the body is in need at a given moment (at the point of the examination), which is the disturbed energetic function(s) (Liver, Kidney, Spleen…) and at which level (the Five Shu points, Luo points, Back-Shu/ Front-Mu points, Extraordinary Channels, emotional chain of Stomach, of the Gall bladder, chain of the Spleen, outer pathway of the Bladder channel, teeth, physical traumatisms...). That is most often the aim of acupuncture treatment. It is the body that shows where it is in need at a given moment and not the therapist who decides what it is good for the patient. The therapist doesn't have to worry about the choice of points; he/she doesn't decide anything, he/she just does what the tissues tell him/her.

Correction consists in giving the body the precise information that will enable it to correct itself, and for this, tissue palpation is essential. There is no tonification or sedation technique on points.

It's important to stress that in our approach, different practitioners on a given patient find the same disturbances and therefore make the same corrections (notion of reproducibility which is an essential criterion in science).

Our aim is not to replace traditional means of diagnosis (pulse taking, tongue examination, questioning...) or treatment, but provide therapists a new tool that will enable them to confirm, clarify or invalidate the therapeutic choice they have made using conventional tools. This approach can be used as a treatment method in its own right, or as an additional tool for therapists using more traditional techniques.

THE GREAT LUO OF STOMACH (part 2)

Reminder: the way in which disturbances in the energy system, as described by the Chinese, manifest in the tissues (skin, muscles, bones, organs) specifically forms the basis of our approach to TCM. This enables the therapist to transmit the necessary information to the body so that it can correct itself.

We have seen that on the inner pathway of Urinary Bladder channel, the 8th thoracic vertebra, where there is no point, is related to Xu Li. The same applies to the outer pathway of the Urinary Bladder channel, at the level of the 8th rib. We remind you that the inner pathway of the UB channel is more related to the physiological aspect of energy functions, the physical level, whereas the outer pathway of the UB channel is more related to the psychological aspect, the emotional and mental levels. The energy blockage of the 8th rib is linked to disturbances deeper than the 8th thoracic vertebra. It is at the level of the brain, the main marrow. It's as if Xu Li channel were largely obstructed, preventing Shen energies from flowing down to the body.

OVERALL CONTROL

--> Surface vertical interrogation with the hand palm 1 handbreadth outside the base of the sternum. This control is not included in the 4 Luo control described in the previous paragraph. In the event of blockage, 2 secondary controls must be done:

a) Surface transverse interrogation on the dorsal side of the 5th toe.

b) Surface transverse interrogation on the plantar face of the interphalangeal joint of the big toe.

Dysfunction of the costotransverse articulation in the eighth rib (mobility is abnormal and on palpation, the area is dense, tense, touch-sensitive but not spontaneously).

CORRECTION

a) If the blockage is on the 5th toe, the therapist puts one hand on the 8th rib at the level of the outer pathway of the UB channel, and with the other, looks for the "rope" between his/her both hands at UB 7, UB 8 or UB 9. We find this blockage particularly in central nervous system disorders (Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer's disease...).

b) If the blockage is on the big toe, the therapist puts one hand on the 8th rib at the level of the outer pathway of the UB channel, and with the other looks for the rope at DM 17, DM 18 or DM 19. We find this blockage particularly in deep psychological disturbances.
