Matthieu Ricard revient sur ce moment où il a fait le choix de s’installer dans l’Himalaya pour s’engager dans la voie monastique et devenir moine bouddhiste.
« Rétrospectivement, je pense que ce fut une bonne chose d’avoir laissé les choses mûrir pour que le «grand départ» ne soit pas un saut dans le vide, mais l’aboutissement naturel d’un processus, le franchissement d’un col qui débouche sur une vallée fertile. Parvenu à ce point, attendre plus longtemps m’aurait donné le sentiment d’être pris au piège dans un monde qui ne correspondait plus à mes aspirations. Je n’étudierais plus la division cellulaire des bactéries, mais les mécanismes du bonheur et de la souffrance, de l’ignorance et de la connaissance. Je ne conçus jamais le moindre doute sur la pertinence de mon choix. [...] Après sept allers-retours, le billet que j’achetai pour l’Inde fut, enfin, un aller simple. »

Matthieu Ricard looks back on that moment when he decided to settle in the Himalayas to embark on the monastic path and become a Buddhist monk.
" Looking back, I think it was the right thing to have allowed circumstances to mature so that my “grand departure” was not a leap into the void but the natural culmination of a process, the crossing of a mountain pass leading to a fertile valley. Having reached that point, if I had waited any longer it would have felt as if I were trapped in a world that no longercorresponded to my aspirations. Now, I would no longer be studying cellular division in bacteria, but the mechanisms of happiness and suffering, ignorance and wisdom. I never had the least doubt about the rightness
of my decision. [...] After seven round trips, the ticket I bought for India was, finally, one way."
