Three years of progress. How do we keep it going?
New data from the State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World (SOFI 2026) report shows hunger has declined for the third consecutive year. An estimated 645 million people faced hunger in 2025, 14 million fewer than in 2024, and 43 million fewer than in 2022.
There's another first in this year's report: hunger in Africa declined for the first time in almost a decade. The drop is small, and around 309 million people across the continent still faced hunger in 2025, but it's a turning point worth noting.
This kind of progress doesn't happen by accident, and it doesn't sustain itself. The report is clear that these gains are fragile.
Trade disruptions, rising fertiliser and transport costs, and a strengthening El Niño all threaten to reverse them. Meanwhile, official development assistance to sub-Saharan Africa fell by 26.3% this year.
As our former SUN Movement Coordinator, Afshan Khan, said: "Nutrition must become the golden thread, running through every policy, every programme and every investment."
That's the principle behind the SUN Movement. To make sure the millions who still can't access a healthy meal aren't left behind, nutrition can't sit with one ministry alone. It has to be built into health, agriculture, education, social protection and climate policy, together, across our 67 member countries.
