🇺🇸 (Español 👇) Guilt gives the mind a sense of agency… it creates the possibility that, if we had acted differently, the outcome might have been different. And for a while, we need to go through that process; it’s a natural part of grieving and a way the mind slowly begins to come to terms with what has happened.

But when we become stuck in endless “what ifs” and “should haves,” the mind can use guilt to avoid the deeper reality of helplessness: that some things were beyond our control, and that the loss cannot be undone.

Moving through grief ultimately means allowing ourselves to recognize that helplessness without turning it into self-blame.

🇺🇸 (Español 👇) What does this actually mean? Sometimes we go through things that are deeply painful or even horrific; no one is exempt from life and from experiencing loss or, having their reality suddenly changed. When this happens, a very common feeling in grief is, “this shouldn’t have happened to me”, and that that needs to be witnessed, cared for and given time.

But, when we go through this, the strongest catalyst for change has to do with finding meaning… And a common confusion is that meaning is found in the event itself, but, sometimes there is no meaning to be found in a horrible event.

Meaning is much more personal. It’s about who we become, and who we can become, after experiencing something deeply horrible or painful. Meaning isn’t found in what happened, but rather, in what we do with what happened and in the person we become afterward.

🇺🇸 Frequently, we can observe that behind problematic substance use, there is not merely a search for pleasure, but also, a desperate need to regulate how one feels about oneself.

In certain personalities with narcissistic traits, a substance can function as a prosthesis for the self: it momentarily provides a sense of security, power, disinhibition, or of being good enough. And here a paradox emerges: narcissistic grandiosity and depression can be two sides of the same coin…

The feeling of being exceptional, invulnerable, or superior can function as a defense against its opposite: feeling insignificant, empty, like a failure, or simply not valuable enough.

When that defense collapses, depression, shame, and emptiness emerge; and substance use can then become a quick way to feel powerful again, numb the pain, or momentarily recover a more bearable image of oneself. Thus, a cycle develops in which the substance attempts to repair a wound that, paradoxically, the substance itself ultimately deepens.

🇺🇸(Español 👇) When we reach the low points of our lives, there can be an unexpected potential to reconnect: with ourselves, with others, and with the world around us.

Today, there’s so much emphasis on getting rid of pain, when perhaps, we don’t talk enough about how pain can also become a catalyst for change, recovery, and reinvention.

Trauma can leave us hypersensitive to what we feel, sense, and perceive. And while that sensitivity can be overwhelming, over time it can also become a deeply attuned way of noticing and connecting to life.

I feel that sometimes we can forget how human beings have an extraordinary capacity to find meaning, connection and new ways of being in the aftermath of what has tested us.

🇺🇸 (Español 👇)Trauma doesn’t always come from one big event… sometimes, it is built slowly, through small experiences that teach us to live on high alert, to distrust, to people-please, to withdraw, or to fear abandonment.

Over time, these experiences can become patterns that we carry into our relationships and into the way we see ourselves.

But our patterns are not our destiny. We didn’t choose many of the wounds we carry, but we can choose to face them. Healing isn’t simply about “thinking differently”; it’s about understanding and transforming the emotions and beliefs we learned in order to survive.

Personally, I believe that, in part, healing is walking the path we need to walk in order to stop living from what happened to us and start living from what we choose to do with it today.

🇺🇸 (Versión en Español en el siguiente post) What if the different sides of you aren’t the problem? What if they are actually parts of you asking to be understood?

One of the perspectives I work with in therapy, is Internal Family Systems (IFS). This is a comprehensive approach that demonstrates how we all have different “parts” within us. From this framework, multiplicity isn’t pathological, quite the contrary; it actually reflects the beautiful complexity of human beings.

Here, the goal is not to change or eliminate the “bad” in ourselves, but rather, to find balance through letting go of things we’ve been carrying that are no longer necessary.

Why? Because everything that we do that causes us pain or that limits us, actually reflects aspects of ourselves that are caught in the past, holding on to coping mechanisms that served us in another time… but that don’t today.

How do we work with this in therapy? Identifying, listening and updating the part do that it’s more aligned with where you are and what you need today, rather than the past where it came to be.

If we take a moment, we can all notice some of these parts… One part might be highly responsible and in control, another might constantly worry, while another wants to escape, please others, or simply be left alone. These parts can sometimes seem contradictory, but each one has developed for a reason, often to protect us from pain or keep us safe. Because beneath the fear, perfectionism, anger, self-doubt, or avoidance, there is often a deeper intention to protect…

🇺🇸 (Español 👇) Life scripts are unconscious patterns that influence how we relate to others, what we allow, what we avoid and what we believe we deserve. Thus, phrases such as: “I have to be perfect,” “I can’t fail,” “I must always take care of others,” or “if I show what I feel, I will be rejected,” end up becoming an invisible thread that guides our decisions.

However, these scripts are neither our identity nor our destinies, but rather, strategies that, at some point, made sense. And when bring into awareness the scripts that were stored in the unconscious, they stop directing us from the shadows.

Thinking in terms of scripts allows us to move from “Why does this always happen to me?” to 👉 “What story did I learn about myself that I am unconsciously replaying?”

We first need to recognize the existing script before we can start to write a different one…

🇺🇸 (Español👇) Many of the ways we think and act today were shaped long before we became aware of them. Early experiences, family dynamics, strong emotions that still live within us, and the roles we learned to play can quietly become patterns that guide our choices in adulthood. We may find ourselves, again and again, in similar conflicts, relationships, or situations without fully understanding why.

In therapy, we explore both the present challenges and the deeper currents beneath them. Not because the past is more important than the present, but because what is unseen often continues to live through us.

Healing is not becoming someone else. It is seeing clearly. The more clearly we see, the less we are pushed and pulled by old conditioning.

Awareness creates choice, and choice creates freedom: the freedom to stop repeating what is familiar and start living what is true.
