Happy March 1!
March for me, is the SIGN that we’re coming to the END of winter!
More sun, warmer temperatures and more outdoor activities (😍).
Typically with season changes, comes change in people’s activities.
Change is good!…when done the right way.
It is great to challenge our bodies in new ways and vary our activity. HOWEVER. We can’t just have the “JUMP RIGHT IN” mentality.
Sudden increases in training load can play a key role in the development of running-related injuries. We can apply this to the addition of many new loads on the body (aka: jumping, cycling, or other sports we might not complete during winter months).
The origin of many sport-related injuries are mechanical - they are related to the stresses and forces being applied to different parts of the body.
SO - if we are suddenly increasing load/ forces to our body, we are more likely to sustain an injury!
New activities = new loads on our bodies. (Yes, in this case “new” includes something we haven’t done in 8 months).
We can’t just jump back to the speedy 10km runs we were doing last Fall, 3 hours of beach volleyball on a Saturday, or tennis every day if we haven’t been training this way during the winter!
We need to EASE into it, or else we put ourselves at a much higher risk of injury.
Need help getting back into your favourite Spring activities? Shoot me a message!
