The hypocrisy was absolute. European preachers stood on African soil, holding Bibles printed with African resources, preaching to Africans that earthly wealth was vanity. They taught that patience was a virtue and that obedience would be rewarded in the afterlife. Meanwhile, African wealth was being loaded onto those same ships and taken to build European cathedrals, fund European universities, and finance European empires.
They told Africans not to fight for their resources because their kingdom was not of this earth. They taught that suffering was noble and that resistance was sinful. While Africans were promised heaven, Europeans were building infrastructure, accumulating capital, and securing generational wealth with the very resources they told Africans to despise.
This was not Christianity. This was psychological warfare disguised as salvation.
The Bible became a weapon more effective than the gun. A gun can kill a body, but a distorted gospel can kill a people’s will to resist. When you convince someone that their suffering is God’s will, you do not need chains. They will police themselves. They will accept exploitation as divine ordinance. They will wait for a heavenly reward while their earthly inheritance is stolen.
Africa was not conquered by superior morality or divine favor. It was conquered by superior weaponry and superior deception. The same nations that preached the gospel of peace were the nations that drew the borders, extracted the wealth, and divided the people.
Today, the message has changed but the mechanism remains. Africans are still told to wait. Wait for foreign investment. Wait for Western approval. Wait for international aid. Wait for permission to develop. The reward is always deferred, always just out of reach, always in someone else’s hands.
But here is the truth they feared we would discover. God gave humanity dominion over the earth. He did not designate some people as masters and others as servants. He did not bless theft. He did not sanction exploitation. The gospel of patience was a tool to keep us compliant while our future was mortgaged.
Africans must reclaim both their resources and their spirituality. We cannot afford to wait for heaven while our earth is plundered. We cannot afford to be pious while our children suffer. We cannot afford to be humble while our wealth builds other nations.
The same God who blessed the extractive powers with African resources is the God we worship. It is time to ask why we were taught to be content with poverty while others were taught to be greedy with our wealth.
Our reward is not just in heaven. Our reward is here, in the soil, in the minerals, in the labor, and in the sovereignty we must reclaim.
