The protector deserves as much love, compassion and respect as the wound. Only when the protector feels truly safe will it allow us to reach what it has spent a lifetime protecting 🙏
In the last few weeks, through working with others and reflecting on my own journey, I've found myself coming back to one thing - the protector.
I see it in myself and I see it in so many others.
The protector often stepped forward when we were babies or children, at a time when we didn't have the capacity to process what was happening. It adapted, learned and survived and over time many of us didn't just have a protector - we became identified with it, we gave it our identity!
This part is be deeply wise, it steps in when our emotions become overwhelming or when life feels unsafe. But if it has carried that responsibility for decades, it can also become exhausting. It may shut us down, pull us away from others, keep us constantly busy, become controlling, hypervigilant or confrontational. Not because it wants to harm us, but because it believes this is what keeps us safe.
Healing isn't about getting rid of the protector, it deserves as much love, compassion and respect as the wound itself.
Only when the protector finally feels safe can it begin to loosen its grip, allowing us to reconnect with the parts of ourselves it has spent a lifetime protecting.
Be gentle, be kind and be loving to self.
Dave ❤️🙏
