Could childhood emotional neglect still be affecting you today?
Many people grow up believing their childhood was "fine." They had a roof over their head, food on the table, and their physical needs were met.
Yet they still struggle as adults with low self-worth, people-pleasing, difficulty identifying their emotions, perfectionism, or feeling disconnected from themselves and others.
This is something Dr Jonice Webb has brought to light through her work on Childhood Emotional Neglect (CEN).
Emotional neglect isn't always about what happened to us—sometimes it's about what didn't happen. Perhaps your feelings weren't acknowledged, comfort wasn't available, or your emotional needs went unnoticed.
As a counsellor, I have completed training informed by Jonice Webb's work and regularly support clients experiencing the lasting effects of childhood emotional neglect.
Healing begins with understanding your story, recognising that your feelings matter, and learning new ways to connect with yourself.
If any of this resonates with you, know that you don't have to work through it alone.
