Hamstring rehabilitation should involve much more than isolated hamstring strengthening.
These are three beginner exercises that
can be useful in the early stages of rehab:
β’ Back extensions - 3 x 12
β’ Hamstring Pallof press- 3 x 8-10
β’ Hamstring bridge- 3 x 40 sec
These are just examples and should be tailored to your own rehab journey.
Early-stage rehab should focus on restoring strength, improving lumbopelvic control, and developing the capacity of the entire kinetic chain, not just the injured muscle. The hamstrings play an important role in transferring force between the trunk and lower limb, so deficits in trunk, hip, and pelvic control may influence movement quality and loading during higher-demand tasks.
As rehab progresses, the programme should follow the principles of progressive overload and gradually expose you to the specific demands of your sport. This includes higher force production, longer muscle lengths, faster contraction velocities, sprinting, acceleration/deceleration, and change of direction where appropriate.
The goal isn't just to be pain free. it's to restore the physical qualities required for performance and reduce the risk of re-injury.
