Summer Safety Tips for Your Indoor/Outdoor Cat!

Even on Scotland's warmer days, our furry friends can overheat — so here's how to keep your kitty cool and comfortable this summer!

Inside the house:
• Keep curtains or blinds closed during the warmest part of the day to block out the sun.
• Open windows on opposite sides of the house to get a nice cross breeze going.
• Cool tile or stone floors are your cat's best friend — they'll find them on their own!
• A damp towel or pet cooling mat works a treat too.
• Toss some ice cubes in their water bowl to keep it fresh and cool.
Outside:
• Make sure there's always shade available — a tree, bush, or covered porch is perfect.
• Keep a fresh bowl of cool water outside too.
• Watch out for warm pavement that can burn those little paws on sunnier days!
Grooming matters:
• Regular brushing removes excess fur and helps air circulate through their coat.
• Skip the full shave though — their fur actually helps insulate them from the heat!
Know the warning signs of heat stroke:
Excessive panting, drooling, lethargy, or stumbling means it's time to act fast. Move them to a cool spot, offer water, and call your vet immediately.

The most important thing? Make sure your cat can always get back inside to cool off. They're smart, but they need the option!

Stay cool out there — you AND your kitties!

Feel free to tag a fellow cat owner who needs to see this!

Donkeys are different… and anyone who’s ever owned one knows exactly what I mean.

They’re not just small horses.
They’re thinkers. Observers. Quietly intelligent.
They carry not just physical weight — but presence, personality, and an incredible sense of awareness.

And that’s exactly why I love working with them.

Over the last 25 years working with animals, I’ve learned something most people miss…
Donkeys don’t always show pain the way horses do.

They compensate.
They adapt.
They carry on.

Until one day… they don’t.

I see it all the time across the NE of Scotland
• Stiffness through the hips and pelvis
• Subtle changes in movement or behaviour
• Early arthritis that goes unnoticed
• Muscle and joint dysfunction that slowly builds over time

And because their anatomy is different to horses, they need a different approach.

Chiropractic care for donkeys is not about force.
It’s precise, gentle, and completely tailored to how they move and function.

When you get it right, the change is incredible…
You see it in their movement.
But more importantly — you see it in their eyes.

If your donkey isn’t quite right, or you just want to stay ahead of problems before they start, I’m here to help.

You know your dog better than anyone.

So when something feels “just slightly off”… it usually is.

The problem is, most issues don’t start with obvious pain or limping.
They start with small changes — the kind that are easy to overlook or explain away.

Here’s what to watch for:

• They’re slower getting up or lying down
• They hesitate before jumping in the car or onto the sofa
• Their performance has dropped (especially in agility or working dogs)
• They’re stiff after walks or rest
• They’re not running quite as freely as they used to
• You notice changes in behaviour — more irritable, quieter, or less playful
• They sit unevenly or struggle to hold posture
• One side seems weaker than the other

These are not “just signs of ageing.”

They’re often early indicators that joints aren’t moving properly, muscles are compensating, and the body is under strain.

Left unchecked, these small changes can quietly build into bigger problems — affecting mobility, performance, and long-term health.

At Riverside Chiropractic, we assess how your dog moves, functions, and compensates — so we can address the root cause early, not just chase symptoms later.

Because your dog shouldn’t just cope… they should thrive.

If something feels off, trust your instinct.

There’s something special about watching a dog and handler move as one; speed, precision, trust, and pure joy in the work. And that’s exactly what we’re lucky enough to see every week here in Aberdeen and across the North-East.

This year, so many of our agility dogs and their owners stepped onto the stage at Crufts 2026 and absolutely delivered. The standard was incredible, and to know we play even a small role in supporting these partnerships is something we’re genuinely proud of.

Agility places huge demands on a dog’s body—tight turns, explosive take-offs, high-speed landings. It’s not just about performance, it’s about longevity. Keeping joints moving well, muscles functioning properly, and spotting small issues before they become big problems is what allows these dogs to keep doing what they love.

That’s where we come in.

Through chiropractic care, laser therapy, and tailored support, we help keep these athletes comfortable, resilient, and performing at their best—whether they’re competing at Crufts or simply enjoying their training at home.

In this video, we take you behind the scenes of what working with agility dogs really looks like and why proactive care makes such a difference.

To all of our agility clients, thank you. Your dedication, your standards, and the way you care for your dogs doesn’t go unnoticed. We’re proud to be part of your team.

If you’ve got an agility dog and want to keep them moving, jumping, and turning at their best—send us a message or book in for an assessment.
