Mixed Emotions Play Therapy

Mixed Emotions Play Therapy Play Therapy is a therapeutic intervention for children that uses play as a way of helping them process their feelings and life experiences.

Hi I'm Sharlene, a BAPT Registered Play Therapist®. I'm based in Aberdeen City and offer Play Therapy for children, mostly between the ages of 4 and 12 years. Play Therapy can provide support for children facing a range of social, emotional and behavioural challenges. If your child is going through a difficult time, they may benefit from Play Therapy and the opportunity to share their thoughts and

feelings through play instead of talking alone. Please get in touch if you want to know more about Play Therapy and if it may be right for your child.

😃🤪🥳☹️🤯 Phew! It's been a week! 🤥🙃🫨😡🤐

This week, our feelings may be taking up a little more space.

The excitement of a new year. The worry of the unknown. The frustration of change. The sadness of leaving familiar routines behind...

Feelings can be loud, but they're not the whole story. They are something we carry, notice and learn from.

In play therapy, children can explore their feelings and make sense of their experiences through the language of play ✨

🎒 Back to school is coming… but do we need to prepare our children emotionally too? The return to school can bring a mixture of excitement, nerves and uncertainty. Here are some simple ways to help your child:

👫🧑‍🏫 Practise through play
Play out the school morning together- getting dressed, saying goodbye, meeting the teacher or going into the classroom gives children a safe way to explore what’s coming.
😵‍💫You don’t have to take their worries away
Your child doesn’t need to feel completely confident before going back. Acknowledge how they are feeling and help them know that they can cope with difficult feelings- “It’s okay to feel worried. We can work through it together.”
🌿 Keep the first week gentle

Starting school or returning after the holidays is a big adjustment. Keep routines predictable, allow extra time and keep expectations low while everyone settles. Sometimes a little play, connection and reassurance can go a long way. 🫶

Daily child led moments for play can help make a difference, especially during the summer holidays when routines change and children have more free time 😊

The Power of 15 Minutes: Why "Special Play Time" Matters

As parents and carers, it's easy to feel like we need to solve problems, teach lessons or keep life moving.

But sometimes, the most powerful thing we can do is simply play.

Not organised activities.
Not educational games.
Not asking lots of questions.

Just 15 minutes of child led Special Play Time.

During this time:

Let your child choose what to play.

Follow their lead rather than directing the play.

Resist the urge to teach, correct or solve problems.

Describe what you notice rather than asking lots of questions.

Be fully present. Put your phone away and enjoy being together.

When children experience this kind of uninterrupted attention, they receive a powerful message:

"You matter."

"I enjoy spending time with you."

"Your ideas are important."

"You are accepted just as you are."

These moments help build connection, confidence and emotional security. Over time, they can strengthen your relationship and support your child's emotional wellbeing far more than we often realise.

You don't need expensive toys or elaborate activities.

You don't need hours of free time.

Just 15 minutes of uninterrupted, child led play can make a meaningful difference.

Your presence is the most valuable thing you can bring.

Sometimes, the greatest gift we can give our children isn't advice or answers.

It's our undivided attention.

Have you set aside 15 minutes of Special Play Time this week?

Every day, children are born into the world with their own unique story waiting to unfold. Each brings curiosity, imagination, resilience and the potential to grow in remarkable ways.

Birthdays are a beautiful reminder that growth isn't only measured in years, but also in the relationships we build, the challenges we overcome and the moments where we feel truly seen, heard and understood.

Growth is a lifelong journey. Our experiences shape us, connection helps us flourish and play nurtures wellbeing from the very beginning.

Children don’t need to be rushed or pushed to talk before they’re ready- they benefit best from a safe, trusting space where they can lead the way. By honouring their pace, we create the conditions for real connection, exploration and lasting healing 🫶

Children heal best when they feel safe, understood, and in control of their therapeutic journey. Unlike adults, children often communicate through play rather than words. They may not yet have the language, emotional awareness, or sense of safety needed to talk directly about difficult experiences.

In child-centred play therapy, we trust that children will show us what they need us to know when they are ready.

🧸 We don't force conversations.
🧸 We don't rush disclosures.
🧸 We don't set the agenda.
🧸 We follow the child's lead.

This doesn't mean therapy lacks direction. It means we respect the child's internal timetable for healing.

When children are pressured to talk before they feel ready, they may become overwhelmed, shut down, or feel that their boundaries have been crossed. By allowing children to move at their own pace, we create the conditions where genuine exploration, expression, and healing can occur.

Sometimes progress looks like talking about a difficult experience.

Sometimes progress looks like building trust.

Sometimes progress looks like feeling safe enough to simply play.

The therapeutic relationship provides a secure base from which children can explore their thoughts, feelings, and experiences when they are ready—not when adults think they should be.

💚 Healing cannot be rushed. In play therapy, we honour the child's pace because lasting change happens when children feel safe enough to lead the way.

As the school year ends, children often feel more than excitement for summer. Saying goodbye to teachers, routines, friendships and familiar classrooms can feel overwhelming. Endings can bring MIXED EMOTIONS- such as pride, relief, sadness, worry and uncertainty. As children process these changes, BIG behaviours sometimes seem to appear “out of nowhere”. Ways to support your child through this transition are:

✨ Talk about upcoming changes early
✨ Reflect on favourite memories and achievements together
✨ Create simple goodbye rituals or keepsakes
✨ Keep summer routines as consistent as possible
✨ Make space for all feelings through play

In play therapy, children are given space to process endings safely, building confidence for new beginnings. If your child is struggling with this transition, play therapy may help them explore and navigate their feelings. Please get in touch if you’d like to arrange a parent session to explore what may best support your child and family.
