Spent the afternoon showing a group how to make a warming-cooling muscle and joint balm based on the famous Tiger Balm. The smells were incredible. Then we talked about herbal first aid using some simple techniques and key herbs that can be found either in the kitchen, garden or in the hedgerow: rose water, lavender, chamomile, elderflower, thyme, yarrow, and linden - which will sort you out for burns, cuts, scraps, bleeding, colds, tension, bites, digestion, sleep, and itchy skin.

This sheet of an Anglo-Saxon manuscript, alongside many manuscripts, was thrown out of the monestery during the dissolution of the monestries around 1535 and reused to wrap a 16th-century school book! Amazingly, it was recovered and now sits in the collection at the Wellcome Library. On it, there are medical recipes written down in old English by monks in the 11th century for heartache, lung disease, an ointment, and salve for tumours.

The 10th of August is the seventh World Day Against Witch Hunts.

Why is it important to support this day?

Because awearness breaks the silence of a human rights abuse that is often considered a thing of the past.

Modern day witch accusations still use the principals laid out in the Malleus Maleficarum (The hammer of the witches) from 1486, and it continues to be about social vulnerability, lack of healthcare, and gaps in education. Witch hunting still affects mainly women, children, and people with disabilities. When people don't have security, fear and anxiety take over, and they look for someone to blame, leading to people being ostracised, injured, and even killed because they are accused of practising witchcraft.

Share to raise awareness of these issues.

Ran a lovely foraging walk this morning. The highlight for the women was seeing the hazelnuts on the tree as they had never seen them before. Hazelnuts in Celtic myth gave poetic inspiration and prophetic dreams, and in Norse mythology, the tree was known as the tree of knowledge sacred to Thor. It's funny you can walk past a hazeltree and never see its nuts, but once you notice one, the veil is lifted, and you can see the tree is full of nuts.

The next walk is on 21st Aug. If you fancy coming along:
