A little bit about why I’m running the London Marathon…
Many of you know me as your chiropractor, but there is a part of my story that I don’t often talk about.
Running the London Marathon has always been something I’ve wanted to do, but this year it means so much more than simply completing 26.2 miles.
The photo I’ve shared is one of the last pictures I have of my mum, which makes it incredibly special to me.
When I was 10 years old, I lost my mum to su***de. It’s something that has shaped so much of who I am and the way I see the world. While it’s not something I usually share openly, I felt it was important to explain why this challenge means so much to me.
My mum was a midwife and spent her life caring for others. She was incredibly kind, generous and devoted to my brother and me. Looking back, I often wonder how different life might have been if she had received the support she needed herself.
That’s why mental health is a cause that is so close to my heart.
Every day in practice I meet people carrying far more than just physical aches and pains. One of the things I love most about being a chiropractor is getting to know people beyond their symptoms, because our health is about so much more than what’s happening physically. Mental and physical wellbeing are so closely connected, and sometimes the people who spend their lives caring for others, or who appear to be coping the best, are the ones silently struggling the most.
Training for a marathon is challenging in every sense. I’m fortunate to have an incredible team of chiropractors and physiotherapists around me to help keep my body in the best shape possible, but the miles, the discipline, the early mornings, the setbacks and the determination to reach the finish line are all part of the journey.
I’m running this marathon in memory of my mum and to help raise funds for better mental health support, in the hope that more people can access the help they need before it’s too late.
If sharing my story encourages just one person to reach out for help, or reminds someone that they don’t have to face their struggles alone, then being vulnerable about something so personal will have been worth it.
If you would like to support me, no matter how big or small the donation, I would be incredibly grateful. Every donation will help fund vital mental health services and support for those who need it most.
Thank you for taking the time to read my story, for supporting me, for remembering my mum with me, and for helping make a difference.
