I’ve been reflecting on what eity20 really stands for.

For me, health isn’t about being perfect, it’s about creating an approach that works in real life.

That means being consistent most of the time, while having enough flexibility to adapt when life changes. It means looking beyond food and exercise to the way we think, feel, sleep, move, structure our days, connect with others and shape the environment around us.

Most importantly, health should help us feel more confident and capable. It shouldn’t leave us feeling guilty or as though we are constantly falling short.

That’s the philosophy behind eity20.

80% Consistency. 20% Flexibility. Sustainable Health. Not Perfection.

Why is changing our behaviour so difficult?

It’s not because we’re lazy or lack motivation.

Our brains are constantly making predictions based on what is familiar. When we try to change our behaviour, even something as simple as folding our arms differently can feel uncomfortable because it’s unfamiliar.

The problem is that many health plans expect perfection. They encourage us to make dramatic changes overnight, and when real life gets in the way, we often feel we’ve failed.

But that’s not how sustainable behaviour change works.

At eity20, we believe consistency and flexibility work together.

80% consistency gives your brain enough repeated experience for healthy behaviours to become familiar.

20% flexibility gives you permission to adapt when life changes, without feeling you’ve failed or need to start again.

Because sustainable health isn’t about doing everything perfectly, it’s about building the capacity to adapt.

80% consistency. 20% flexibility. Sustainable health. Not perfection.

What keeps you going when life gets difficult?

Watching Dawn and Paul row the North Atlantic has reminded me that some of life’s biggest lessons come from the most challenging environments.

What struck me most about this clip isn’t the challenge itself, but Dawn’s clarity about why she’s there. Adventure. Nature. Family.

Those values don’t make the Atlantic any calmer, but they do make the journey worth taking.

It’s a reminder that health isn’t about striving for perfection. It’s about having the capacity to live in line with what matters most to us.

When we’re clear about our values, we’re more likely to stay consistent, adapt when life changes, and keep moving forward.

So here’s a question for you…

What matters most to you?

When people hear 80% Consistency and 20% Flexibility, they often think about nutrition.

But this philosophy is much bigger than food. It underpins the entire eity20 Method and applies to all eight pillars of health.

Take sleep, for example.

One late night, one busy week or one work deadline isn’t what affects our long-term health. It’s when those become our normal that they start to have an impact.

Real life will always happen.

The goal isn’t to protect every pillar perfectly every day, it's to build enough consistency that, when one area of your health is under pressure, you can continue to support yourself in other ways and return to your routine when life settles.

That’s what sustainable health looks like.

It’s not about perfection.

It’s about creating enough consistency that your whole system can adapt when real life happens.

80% Consistency.
20% Flexibility.
Sustainable health. Not perfection.

💬 Over the coming weeks, I’ll be sharing how this philosophy applies across each of the eight pillars of health. Which pillar would you like me to cover next?

What do I mean by Health Regulation?

We often think about our health in separate boxes.

Mental health.
Gut health.
Physical health.

But that’s not how our bodies work.

Our brain, gut microbiome and body are constantly communicating and influencing each other. When one changes, the others respond.

That’s why focusing on just one symptom or one behaviour doesn’t always address what’s really going on.

The eity20 Method brings these systems together, helping people understand what’s influencing their health and create enough stability across the whole system to adapt when life changes.

Because health isn’t about isolated parts.

It’s about understanding the whole system.

Life doesn’t always go to plan.

Right now, Dawn and Paul are on para-anchor. Conditions are so difficult they can’t move forwards. The priority is to hold their position and avoid being pushed backwards.

It’s a powerful reminder of why flexibility matters.

We can prepare. We can train. We can build strong foundations.

But we can’t always control the conditions.

What we can do is adapt.

And that’s exactly what Dawn and Paul are doing now.

80% Consistency.
20% Flexibility.
Sustainable health. Not perfection.

This is what makes all the difficult moments worthwhile. 🌅

We don't look after our health simply to live longer. We look after it so we can enjoy more moments like this along the way.

How many times have you come home from a holiday thinking, 'I’ll start again on Monday?'

That’s exactly the mindset I want to challenge.

Holidays aren’t a break from real life. They are real life.

If our approach to health only works when life is predictable, then it probably isn’t sustainable.

That’s why the eity20 philosophy is built around 80% Consistency and 20% Flexibility.

Not because consistency doesn’t matter, but because sustainable health isn’t about perfection.

It’s about building enough stability that you can enjoy holidays, celebrations, busy weeks and unexpected changes without feeling like you’ve failed or need to start again.

Health should support your life, not compete with it.

80% Consistency.
20% Flexibility.
Sustainable health. Not perfection.

💬 What’s one thing you genuinely enjoy on holiday that you no longer feel guilty about?

Why do we struggle to sustain healthy habits?

One reason is that we often focus on what we should do before thinking about why it matters.

At eity20, we always start with direction.

Not because values replace nutrition, exercise or sleep, but because they give those behaviours meaning.

If one of your core values is family, looking after your health becomes about having the energy to be present with the people you love.

If you value adventure, movement becomes about exploring the world rather than simply burning calories.

If you value inner peace, sleep, stress management and emotional regulation become ways of protecting what matters most.

When our daily behaviours are aligned with our values, consistency becomes easier.

Not because we’re more disciplined, but because we’re moving towards something meaningful.

That’s why Direction is the first step in the eity20 Method. Because sustainable change starts with knowing what matters most to you.

80% Consistency. 20% Flexibility.
Sustainable health. Not perfection.

Dawn and Paul are currently rowing across the North Atlantic, and over the coming weeks I’ll be sharing some of the lessons their journey teaches us about Performance Optimisation.

But what does Performance Optimisation actually look like?

It isn’t performing when conditions are perfect.

It’s performing when they aren’t.

Over the past week, Dawn and Paul have faced relentless fog, headwinds, cold, rain, disrupted sleep, damp clothing, slower progress and constant uncertainty.

Yet they’ve also experienced incredible moments of awe - whales surfacing alongside the boat, dolphins racing past, pilot whales swimming within touching distance, and spectacular sunrises that remind them why they’re there.

Every day, the Atlantic has added another weight to their scales. Yet they continue to move forwards.

Why?

Not because the conditions have been kind.
Because they’ve spent months, indeed years, building the foundations that allow them to adapt.

Every training session.
Every recovery day.
Every meal.
Every piece of planning.
Every hour on the water.

Consistency has built the stability they’re now relying on.

Out in the Atlantic, they can’t control the weather. Just as we can’t control the pressures of everyday life.

Whether your challenge is performing at work, in sport, or simply managing the demands of everyday life, there will always be headwinds.

Deadlines.
Poor sleep.
Travel.
Injury.
Stress.
Unexpected setbacks.

Performance isn’t about avoiding those challenges. It’s about having the capacity to adapt when they arrive.

At eity20, that’s exactly what we help people build.

Consistency builds stability.

Flexibility allows adaptation.

Together they build resilience.

Because sustainable performance isn’t created on the easy days. It’s built by consistently preparing for the difficult ones.

80% Consistency. 20% Flexibility.

Sustainable health. Not perfection.
