Sometimes things we do have consequences we are entirely unaware of. I was reminded of this today when I was caring for my horses. Its spring and they are moulting, so every day to help them along I spend a few minutes grooming them. The tool I use makes little pads of fluff. Next to my boys are a stand of big trees and a big jackdaw nesting area. They come down, sort through and take away the fluffy pads to make warm nests for their babies. When I have left a few pads, I noticed today I was excited for them to find them. One came down and took a few away so I just watched and enjoyed the moment, and felt a gentle comfort that by a simple action I could help them, my horses and myself along today 🥰.

When a pet dies, it can feel like something in you has been torn out 💔

The presence of your dog.
Your routine with your dog.
And the one who was there for all of it.

Who sat beside you through heartbreak, illness and just an ordinary Tuesday afternoon.

Who never judged, never argued, never withdrew.
Who loved you without performance and without conditions.

This week I write about why pet grief can feel so physical, so destabilising and so hard to explain. The heavy ache in the body. The guilt around the final decision. The strange loneliness when others don’t quite understand.

It was real companionship. Real attachment. Real love.

If you have ever felt almost ashamed by how much it hurt, this is for you.

Today is time to talk day - everyone is going through something, and sometimes a few more seconds spent on just sharing the human experience without expectation of return as we go about could be a game changer for someone.

Time to Talk Day is a national awareness day that encourages people to talk more openly about mental health.

For many people, starting a conversation can feel difficult. But checking in with someone, listening without judgement, or sharing how you’re feeling can help reduce stigma and remind people they’re not alone.

Today, you might choose to send a message to a friend, have a chat with a colleague, or simply ask someone how they’re really doing. Small conversations matter.

You can find out more about Time to Talk Day and how to get involved on Mind’s website:
