One of the most persistent and damaging lies that survives after a toxic relationship is the belief that you caused their behavior. That if you had just said things differently, been less sensitive, asked for less, or shown up in a way that better suited them, they would not have treated you the way they did.
But a person who stonewalls, ghosts, or discards is not responding to something you did wrong. They are revealing something about who they are and how they handle discomfort when it is easier to disappear than to communicate.
A mature and emotionally healthy person does not punish you with silence for having needs. They do not vanish without explanation when things get uncomfortable. They do not make you responsible for managing their emotional reactions while simultaneously making you feel like the source of every problem.
If someone in your life consistently responds to conflict or discomfort by pulling away, that is information about their emotional capacity, not evidence of your inadequacy. You are not too much. You are simply with someone who is not enough for what you deserve.
