When my Nana Pauline was living with dementia, we had to find new ways to connect.

One thing she loved was looking at magazine clippings of holidays in Spain to reminisce about her time living there. We couldn't believe how many memories and conversations it sparked.

We set up A Good Day to give this gift of connection to other families going through the same thing.

We wanted to offer dementia-friendly games and activities so other families could keep that bond going after a diagnosis of dementia.

We really hope they help you in your journey as a family member, friend or carer.

Spring is one of the best times to introduce gentle activities for people living with dementia 🌷

Why? Because it naturally engages the senses:

πŸƒ Colour (fresh greens, soft pastels, bright florals)
πŸƒ Texture (petals, leaves, fabric)
πŸƒ Scent (flowers, herbs, fresh air)
πŸƒ Familiarity (gardening, seasonal routines)

These small sensory cues can spark recognition, encourage conversation, and create meaningful moments of connection.

We’ve shared some simple spring craft ideas to help you make the most of the season.

A really special event is coming to our area…

House of Memories – On The Road is the UK’s first immersive mobile museum experience, designed to create meaningful moments for people living with dementia, as well as those who may be feeling vulnerable or socially isolated.

It’s a simple but powerful idea β€” stepping into a space filled with familiar objects, sounds and stories that can spark memories, connection and conversation. A chance to spend time together in a way that feels supportive, engaging and uplifting.

2. Avoid caffeine and large meals later on in the day
3. Encourage light physical activity during daylight hours
4. Keep the bedroom comfortable, quiet, and familiar
5. Offer calm reassurance if the person wakes during the night.

What is sundowning?

People with dementia can sometimes behave differently towards late afternoon and early evening, becoming more confused and agitated.

This is known as sundowning.

The causes are unclear, but it could be connected to hunger, fatigue, overstimulation, mood disorders, or medication.

To avoid or reduce sundowning, keeping routines consistent, lowering lights towards the end of the day, and ensuring all physical needs are met, even if they’re struggling to communicate what they may be (i.e toilet, hunger).
