This week had me running through 3 rooms in someones house after hearing the words "I'll just get my card!"

Those words I must have heard hundreds of times over the years whilst Ive been visiting someone in their home ...the only difference being that the callers are becoming more and more convincing now.

This week it was "White Goods Renewal Insurance". They had 24 hours to renew their policy or the white goods would be removed. .....Funnily enough, as I grabbed the phone...they disconnected the call and Frank still has his washing machine as we speak.

Im all for retaining loved ones Independence, them having their handbag/ wallet with their own cards in and the odd fiver, but do they really need access to their bank account so freely? Especially if deterioration/Dementia/Alzheimers is present?

Its not about retaining their independence, its about keeping them SAFE.

Believe me, these callers are experts at manipulation & will rush someone to make an immediate payment ..and theres not a thing you can do once that transaction has gone through.
No trace...no refund.

If you are fortunate enough to be present when one of these delightful people call your loved one, - and you are unsure of the authenticity..

‼️ Tell the caller you need to verify the call. If its genuine, they will hold.
Call 📞 159 from your own phone and this connects you to straight to their Bank through a government checking service....( alot quicker than dialling their Customer Services !)

🤔 Alternatively, question NOW, - is it SAFE for them to have access to their bank card / bank statements ?

We all want our loved ones to keep their Independence, I certainly promote this constantly! ...but theres a fine line to also keeping them safe 💛

When I say "I provide Bespoke & Tailored Care" .... thats exactly what I do.

A large majority of my evenings & weekends are spent researching. Whether that be researching the net for recently diagnosed rare illnesses ( in many cases, the NHS have lost the ability to sit in front of a heartbroken family and explain in simple terms the progression...how their loved one will change..& how they will be supported by our Health & Social Care services ...its ok, Mr Burnham Im happy to fill that role for all the Consultants & Specialists whilst you & the Baroness shake it up)

Or in many cases, locating services, support groups, & local Hubs for my lovelies (& Families!) within their local areas.

Community & Social presence is PARAMOUNT for anyone that is housebound, elderly, suffering with dementia/ Alziemers, and where possible I want them back into that Community and getting that wellbeing balance back on track.

This is where I recently struck GOLD️ 💛 whilst researching!

"Talkin Tables" is nationwide ( I didn't know this!)
Its a gathering at the same location, same time, same day each week at soooooo many different bases ( ours is the pub 😃) and worth its weight in gold it really is.
People from all walks of life, all ages, all with their own reasons for attending ...but all with the same ethos.. to meet friends & stay within their community.

Have a glass of wine, or a coffee. You just turn up, and immediately you are welcomed in, sat down laughing, chatting with this whole new friendship group!

Its been INVALUABLE to one of my lady's, a lifeline, a connection to a group of such incredibly lovely & kind people. We laugh...constantly every Thursday, - and the Afternoon Tea is an added bonus !

And the best bit.... that feeling in my belly when I sit back and watch them all, ...see how engaged & happy each & every single one of them is.

Its a community coming together & changing lives with the BIGGEST impact 💛

✨️For your local "Talkin Tables" Group give me a ti**le & I'll send you the details 📞 07438 626 429

Are you looking for Private Care & don't know where to even start? ........

Yesterday I watched a horror film being played out in front of me whilst on Social media..& sadly of late, its becoming a very frequent thing.

A lady looking for someone to come in & look after her dad who had Alziemers and "could do with abit of help" . A young lady had commented that she had worked in a Care Home previously and was trained and was available at the times the lady wanted for her dad, and it became apparant she'd gone to school with the lady's son.

As I watched this exchange of words and arrangements being made, my heart was racing and panic set in that this daughter was actually considering paying this girl to come into an environment she not only wasnt qualified or insured to be in ( working in a care home in the past doesn't quite cut it) ...the exchange of requirements for her dad were broadcasted all over social media along with her phone number "to arrange to come round & meet Dad" 🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩

Wrongly or rightly, I messaged the lady directly and explained, although I was fully booked up...I could point her in the direction of a reputable, fully qualified, insured & TRUSTED Private Carer that was local, relief came when she said she would contact them, and thanked me for contacting her as " she didn't know where to start or how to find someone for dad as hed not had a good experience with a local agency"

And I slept soundly in my bed last night knowing Id saved someone from what could have been fatal.

Its a mine field. Its a situation ALOT of families come across, not knowing where to even start, especially if they have had a poor agency in and that trust has been destroyed at the onset.

I may be fully booked up..but I will ALWAYS point you in the right direction.
Im a Registered member of a Professional Carers Network with other qualified Carers within the area, some Ive already recommended on & others I work closely with & pass on my knowledge to so their standards are as high as mine.

But in the event you choose to look into your own Private Care for a loved one.......

✨️ Are they Fully Insured?

✨️Have you seen their portfolio of training & qualifications ?

✨️Are they familiar with Legislations & Regulations?

✨️ Have you read their references / previous client feedback ?

✨️Do they come recommend/have you heard of them?

✨️Are they HMRC Registered?

✨️ Have they arranged to meet both you AND your loved one together first? ( you'll gauge ALOT from this first meeting!)

👉A Self employed, sole Private Carer will provide YOU with how much they charge, they will have set costs that include their overheads, PPE etc ...but remember, as they say.....pay peanuts you get monkeys..so £15 an hour you wont be getting a fully qualified and insured Carer!

👉 A Private Carer will ALWAYS provide a Contract for the client AND next of Kin, along with an An Agreed Care Agreement and Risk Assessments are put in place.

Finding care for a loved one is a daunting task.

Don't accept anything lower than EXCELLENT & OUTSTANDING

At ANY age, everyone deserves only the best care & support & its a decision not to be made lightly ✨️

Last week I told 2 of my lovelies a lie....

Well not a lie as such....I purposely didn't bring them cards & gifts... mention their birthdays or my obligatory singing of "🎵Happy Birthday to yooooou" when I bounced through their front door, when it was both their birthday last week ...

These 2 warm my cockles on a daily basis, they are the essence of a true, strong, loving & very happy marriage held together by ALOT of love and a shared humour of taking the mickey out of one another!

And its incredible to be part of that.

Its Incredible to see so much love between 2 people

Its incredible to walk through their door and be greeted with a huge smile & a hug, and be welcomed like one of their own each day

So at the weekend.. I gatecrashed their little birthday celebrations and rocked up with the cards, gifts, song & hugs to suprise them!

An amazing couple with an amazing family, absolutely loving life & smashing it into their 90s, its a true honour to be part of that ❤️

Yesterday I had such a warm fuzzy feeling 🥹

Yesterday was the Anniversary of me visiting one of my Lovelies.

2 years ago the most frequently used words that are said to me, were said by her daughter "she wont accept any care, she sends the Carers away its a fighting battle every day to get her washed & dressed" .

Being bed bound, with a VERY determined streak in her, I knew this was going to be one hell of a challenge! ....But I also knew, as with so many, - she'd just not had the right care.

She'd been ticked in a box as "Refuses care" .

Dont get me wrong, she had MANY chosen words for me at the start 🤣 but I persevered, & within weeks Id managed to talk her round & with gritted teeth she let me wash her & dress her, & within months, she was sat up in bed with her flowery frock on, perfume & posh pearly hair clips in.

We have the bad days...the days were she cries & it genuinely breaks my heart when she says " What have I got to be up for? What's the point?"

On those days, off go my boots and I climb in next to her, we have a chat & a giggle & shes up, washed & dressed having her marmalade on toast In no time 🤗

I climbed in bed yesterday with the card & a bunch of flowers, & she said ..

" Wow! Have we really been friends for 2 years!"
..Not " you've been my carer for 2 years!"

And it actually struck me that it was that one word that had made the change back at the start.

I didn't stroll in with my carers tunic on throwing out my authority that she " HAD to get up"

And I didn't keep looking at my watch, rolling my eyes when she refused, then walk out.

We'd built a FRIENDSHIP .

And that had been the key part.

And that didn't arf make me feel proud of why I do what I do ❤️

Come & Have a seat Andy...Ill put the kettle on...

Now firstly, its warmed my cockles that someone in a position such as yours has FINALLY recognised what a state the Social Care Sector has become.

I just have a few pointers for you to help you & Baroness Louise Casey when you are putting together your Independent Review of Adult Social Care ( but before Summer 2027 would be a good start)

👉 Recruitment

Why is no one following the CQC ( Care Quality Commission) strict Legislation on the Recruitment Policy? ( its Section 19 Fit & Proper Persons Employed in the Social Care Act 2008 if it helps you find it quicker)
It appears that anyone out there thats willing to "cover the extra shifts" gets a job in care, irrelevant of their experience, qualifications or nature.
Waaaay back in 1996 when I applied for my first role in Social Care it was gruelling. And I mean gruelling! 2 interviews, AND a written exam before you even reached the final interview!
You had to recite the Care Act, you had to provide evidence you were fit for that role before you were even considered to be left alone with our vulnerable & elderly!
It takes ALOT of hard work to do this role & just rocking up for an interview having been a pot washer previously doesn't quite cut it to have the responsibilities to provide a exceptional standard of care.

👉 Management

Where are Care Homes / Respite Services/ Professional Sectors finding their Managment?
Mc Donald's?
A very large amount appear to lack their responsibility in the role that they are to provide outstanding services to those in need and be verrrrry clued up on Regulations & Legislation.
Hell !! I had to correct an Registration Inspector from CQC on what year the Care Act was revised!
Whilst Im on about CQC - perhaps a Chief Exective that overseas the whole Social Care Sector would have been better than the recent one thats never worked a day in care in her life would have been helpful 🤷‍♀️

👉 Better Pay

I'm glad we agree on this Andy. Carers simply are worth far more than minimum wage. I dodged the bullet early and got out of that Agency mess many years ago, but those still stuck in the Agencies & Care Homes working 12 hours a day, many at breaking point, that are qualified, & experienced need a hell of an increase. And I mean a serious increase.

👉Support for Families

Well, where do I start on this Andy. There's no support. That simple. When a loved one is diagnosed with heartbreaking dementia or Alziemers its as the professionals go into hiding.

✨️Where's the front line key roles navigating help for them?
✨️Where are the Affordable services to give these wife's, husbands, sons & daughter much needed breaks and time out?
✨️Where's the support to navigate them into this journey and what the future holds?
✨️Where are the professionals at the end of a phone line to offer reassurance and support when they just cant take anymore?
✨️ Where's the professional that sits them down and educates them on these crucifying diseases on how it will change their loved ones?
✨️Where are the professionals when the sons/daughters hit breaking point and collapse in tears of guilt & exhaustion?

I seem to be doing this role solo.

Seems I'm the only one out there thats fitting the job description of all the above.
Im stretched on 10 hour days as it is Andy.....I could do with a little help.

👉 Reduce Care Home Costs

Does it really cost £1,0000 a week for someone to live in a Residential Unit? Infact one near me is £2,000 a week !!! ...And Respite Services so family's can have a rest from the 24-7 role ...£4,000 PER WEEK ..... Id want bloody butler service, an hourly foot massage, reiki, and a gold toilet for that!!

And just before I finish my last custard cream Andy,.......

Could you send a Memo out to the Chief Exective of the NHS that Covid was 6 years ago. The waiting lists & referrals that are taking over 12 months are NOT because of bloody Covid. They are due to the Professionals / Consultants / Operatives working just a couple of days a week...AND HALF OF THEM FROM HOME.
Us folk like a face to face appointment ( ideally the same day not 4 weeks down the line)

Care Proffesionals in ALL fields should be available 7 days a week. End of.

I'll open the malted milks.. there's plenty more I can navigate you through on Social Care Andy..get yourself comfy 😉

They say "Every Little Helps"..

This is key with Private Care.

I'm one step ahead allllll the time, I know your loved one inside & out. I know every tiny detail others may miss.
I plan ahead on each visit & know their routine that day...and their needs...

👉 Leaving the house phone by their coffee table

👉 Checking the tissue box is full

👉 Folding nightwear onto the radiator ( so they're all warm and cosy at bedtime!)

👉 Loosening the top on the toothpaste

👉 Leaving an extra toilet roll by the toilet / commode

👉 Draping a cardigan on the back of their chair "just in case"

👉 Folding a spare bag just under that pedal bin In the bedroom

👉 And with one particular lady, Leaving out lunch, with the cup a soup open, cup, spoon and kettle topped up to take away that anxiety & difficulty of doing the whole task themselves & not risking them just not bothering eating that day.

Its the attention to detail, on each & every visit to make life just that little bit easier for each & every one of them.
.. Every Little helps ✨️

✨️PROMOTING LOCAL ❗️✨️

This week Im shouting from the roof tops! The local Businesses that play a part in Ellerbeck (& certainly help in it running smoothly day to day !)

A big part of my role is making sure my Care Clients keep a connection to their community.

For many they've lived in this Village 60+ years & loosing that connection to the outside world can be detrimental.

This incredible Coffee Lounge holds the key to that Community connection, its visited by young & old and has been a godsend particular for me taking one particulary lady in each week with Dementia...

👉She knows its Monday
👉 She knows where we go to
👉 She recognises every face in there
👉 She catches up with friends shes known over the years
👉 Customers share memories with her of playing with her children back in the day

And more importantly, she feels welcomed, safe & for that hour she bounces on a high, chatting, laughing & reliving so many memories....its AMAZING to be part of that.

It goes without saying that the coffee ( & cakes!) are incredible but its the owner & the staff that make it so exceptional, personal and welcoming each time you walk through the door.

If there's someone sat alone, they go over and chat with them - that warms my cockles 😊

My eldest son goes in every day to use the workspace upstairs... my youngest calls in by himself after a dog walk for a Latte & a muffin and a chat with the locals and the staff .... and its a perfect relaxing Friday night for me & my husband to sit amongst friends & the staff with a coffee ( or in his case...a pint!)

Its the heart of this Village ♥️

Without a doubt, there's 3 of us in my marriage, me, Hubby .....& Ellerbeck. ( Happy Wife...Happy Life 😉)

ME time is rare, but forever conscious of my own wellbeing, I make sure I take time out to relax..recharge & thoroughly reset once a month & this little hidden gem does exactly that!

Hattie is truelly incredible and knows her stuff! Providing traditional Thai Massage in a beautiful relaxing environment ( yes I do nod off! 💤) & with a check in on every visit on "which part hurts" is a testament to the standard of service she provides.

Being on my feet over 12 hours a day takes its toll & with a recent diagnosis of Plantas Fasciitis ( basically damaged muscle to the heel & arches) I can be in considerable pain in my feet, coupled with so much manual handling, - my back & neck also take a hit & Hatties ON IT the minute I land...and I literally float out of there!

And again, the best bit shes LOCAL !!

So many people ask me how I manage it, how I can be up at 5am every day, flat out busy & on my feet till gone 7pm ....Hattie is how.

That reset & recharge works miracles 💆‍♀️

Navigating a Small Business AND navigating it all solo is TOUGH!
The Accounting side is a complete mind field, working your socks off to line the pockets of "Mr Tax Man" frustrates me no end, but I have to do it right, I have to cover all legal requirements & keep upto date with not just the figures, but alllllll the bits inbetween that require attention.

Now, Ive not had the best previous Accountants experience, shall we say. It was a huge added additional stress that at times, made me question why I was even going down the self employed route, often having me in tears in a system I was completely new to, and was expected to know everything about.
......& then this little office arrived in the Village.

I was convinced this was a sign that this was meant to be. I had nothing to loose but my sanity if I continued with the current accountants & I arranged a consultation.

It was the first time I felt genuinely HELPED by an Accountant.... and from Day 1 these incredible people made sense of the mess from my current accountants. Sorted it all out in one afternoon, and above all GUIDED me to navigating all the financial & Tax side of Ellerbeck.

I couldn't be more grateful for them giving me back my sanity & providing not just a friendly & approachable service but one where I can reach out any time of the day & my query is dealt with & sorted immediately....& a bigger bonus its LOCAL!
I can pop in anytime & I can walk out, relieved, stress free & 100% supported.

Its VERY rare to fall upon Accountants that appreciate, AND help you, and to know they now also support my Husband AND sons Businesses is a HUGE bonus to keeping us all on track, & navigating our small businesses without any stress 😃
