It's Carers Week this week, so I wanted to take a moment to talk about something that often gets overlooked...

💛 You Matter Too.

When you are caring for someone you care about, its easy to put yourself to the bottom of the list.

But caring for someone else day after day can be exhausting both physically and emotionally, and if you are running on empty...eventually something has to give.

That's why taking a break isn't selfish.

Its ESSENTIAL.

Not just a few minutes to nip to the shop and rush back...

✨️Enough time to go for lunch with a friend
✨️Visit Family
✨️Go Swimming
✨️Watch a film
✨️Sit in the garden in the sun with a book
✨️ Book an appointment at the Hairdressers
✨️Take the dog on that long overdue walk
....or simply to enjoy a few hours of being YOU rather than someones carer.

👉This is why help from a 1:1 Private Carer is the way forward.

👉You have a trusted professional who KNOWS the person
👉 Peace of mind they are in safe hands
👉No Worrying
👉 Not checking your phone every 5 minutes
👉Not rushing home
👉Your loved one is safe, happy & well cared for.

Actually switching off.

So if you are an unpaid carer reading this...

💛 Looking after yourself is part of looking after the person you care for.

YOU matter to 💛

I genuinely believe I'm the happiest person out there 😁

I possess a rare gratefulness of life each and every day,
I have pretty amazing family & friends, and tip top health ( albeit a few aches & pains and a dicky ticker) ....but on the very rare occasion my "get up & go" has wandered off slightly, its not a day off or a relaxing weekend away that springs my happy gene back.....its Ellerbeck.

The connection I have with each & every person is incredible 🙌

✨️Watching someone finish off getting ready as I arrive, adding that touch of lipstick & perfume ...makes me smile

✨️ Picking someone up that doesn't feel 100%...& dropping them off with tears in their eyes from laughing...makes me smile

✨️ Sat by someones bed, that doesn't want to get up and face the day & watching that mood lift as the Visit progresses...makes me smile

✨️ Just watching the safeness they feel in a world of confusion ...makes me smile

When you're out and about and see the Agency Carers ...Ive yet to come across one that smiles - that has a spring in their step......Thats not because they're poor carers..its simply because they haven't got time to think. They're trying to get through the 53 visits they have to get through in an hour, with Head Office on their case continually.

👉That reflects hugely on the Care they deliver.

👉That reflects on how that client feels for the rest of that day.

👉 That contributes to the clients deterioration.

👉 Their mood transfers to their clients-...rapidly.

These People DESERVE Private Care.

They DESERVE that time..that 1:1 devoted attention....thats what makes ME smile, and thats what puts a spring in my step every single day ❤️

Believe me I know its like getting blood from a stone to get loved ones to keep hydrated ! But with this heatwave, its more important that ever!

So Ive put together a few little tips to help 👍

👉 Move the Cardy / sweater from the pile you know they'll put on in the morning. Its a habit to wear it,not a requirement because it "might get chilly" . Its 25c - it wont get chilly! - Leave a thin blanket to hand instead.

👉 It doesnt have to always be water they have to hand, leave a jug / flask of cordial at the side of where they sit for easy reach

👉 If they like fruit, chop some watermelon up where they can get to it - its a fantastic hydration source!

👉 Test, Test and Test that Lifeline Pendant! ( just press the button, when the voice comes over just simply say who you are and you are doing a Test) They actually like these calls & its recorded that the equipment is working

👉 Leave top windows open in all rooms

👉 Leave a pack of baby wipes on their coffee table within reach

👉 close the curtain to the window you know the sun may shine through, right at them on the chair.

👉Most importantly, increase your communication. Give them a few extra calls on the phone, pop in / get neighbours/ care company going in an extra couple of times throughout the day.

And please please check on elderly neighbours. Where as I will always ensure they have had a good drink before I leave, not all carers / visitors do so, if you know you have a vulnerable / elderly neighbour - just pop your head to the window/ over the fence & check they're doing ok ✨️

The Visit times with Agency Care has always baffled me..

False promises were handed out to so many at their most needing time, the promise of 1 hour visits to help Mum/Dad regain their independence, to be able to get out of bed, bathed/washed/showered/ have breakfast with ease, dignity and trust in a calm manner, and at THEIR pace.

Not once was I able to spend a full hour to deliver 100% devoted care.

This wasn't us Carers that were at fault, this was down to the Big Cheeses sat in the Office, trying to get as many contracts in as possible, completely bombarding us with visits on a tight schedule ..which often meant that hour was condensed into 15 minutes.

15 minutes. Think about that.
Those 15 minutes may be the only time in that whole day that person sees some one.. pads being removed & personal Care on a conveyor belt of a long list... all to be done by 11.30am. In and out in a flash.

When I first started my Business Plan back in 2019, this was at the forefront of the (many!) things I would provide differently with Private Care.

These people DESERVED my time.
I gave those promises of a full one hour at the start of Ellerbeck & I still give that same promise 7 years down the line.

Hey! if we are all done in 30 minutes, the kettle goes on & we sit TOGETHER, this part of care is paramount and contributes massively to their all round well being. We are friends.

Your loved one is worth more than 15 minutes 🥺

Today's post is an Appreciation Post to my long suffering Husband!

I very rarely go to work, come home & switch off!

I can crawl through the door at 8pm & still have a pile of paperwork to do 🥴

Since 2019 hes been the constant support, through the good ...& not so good times throughout Ellerbeck growing....& waited at the door with a hug on many days Ive said my Goodbyes to lovelies & cried a ocean.

Tea is always made...dogs have been walked... kids sorted & hes pretty awesome at keeping my Coffee mug topped up to!

Hes always "oncall" for Ellerbeck & fixed many doors handles, hung many pictures & dropped off paperwork / phones once Ive set off.....& this week rushed to rescue myself & a distressed lovely when the smoke alarm was ringing top note with a battery fault way out of our reach.

Believe me, it made her day & she thoroughly enjoyed chatting to him! ( he especially loved the part of "oooo aren't you handsome!" 🤣🤣)

Allllllll whilst running his own Pest Control business 🐝 at one of the busiest times of the year.

Families are quite often the "Forgotton Ones" within professional services.

The ones that have no other option but to " just get on with it".

Caring for an older loved one can take someone to burnout, thats why Ive always ensured the support isnt just for the individual, - its as much for the families to.

✨️ When they need a hug...Im there.

✨️ When its a world of uncertainty and they need guidance...Im there.

✨️ When they desperately need that time out & time for themselves...Im there.

✨️ When THEY are the ones that need a good cry & that reassurance...Im there.

✨️ When theres so much uncertainty of what's to come...Im there.

✨️ When costs & financial matters are strained, and they need guiding to services...Im there.

Im there from Day one.

We are on this journey TOGETHER 💪

Last night I took one of my lovely Ladies to a Show! 🎭

Shes a HUGE Musicals fan, She sings them every morning throughout her Personal Care, some I recognise & sing along to, and sometimes I just hum along and shimmy round the bathroom to 😆

So when I saw a Musical advertised, I asked if she'd like to go, - Needless to say, came a rapid YES!

I made sure we had front row seats for her wheelchair, Tia Maria in her hand and our eyes were glued....

20 minutes in... our laughter started, & we exchanged confused looks 🤔

None of us had a clue on this one! a new Musical the Programme told us. The singing was superb but none of us had an absoloute clue on the story or what was going on!

But you know what...she was OUT OUT. She had her best jumper on & Id curled her hair, she had a tipple and we shared a bag of Haribo and LAUGHED, really belly laughed on the way home in the car, out in the dark, with an added 'ride through the village by night' - all things that she just isnt able to do anymore.

So the Musical didnt go as planned, but the whole night was incredible from start to finish, and we laughed ALOT!

We're already planning our next night out. Either way, we both know it'll be a cracking night because thats how solid our friendship is, thats how much trust there is....

These small things in life can make a very big difference ❤️

Its not just Personal, or Dementia Care that I provide.....

I visit the most beautiful and cutest Husband & Wife I've ever met, for an hour, twice a week.
They're both in their 90's and SUPER independent at home. But dont get out often.

Where early stages of Dementia are apparant for the wife, the Husband suffers with Macular Degeneration, (ARMD) - where the retina of the eyes becomes distorted, making it virtually impossible to read.

Now this gentleman (& his wife!) Have always done the daily crossword in the newspaper together.. its their thing...part of their routine for decades....But with his ARMD its an impossibility 😢

This is where I come in .....

On a Tuesday & Thursday I pick up their Newspaper ( & any bits they may need!)
When I arrive, its like walking into my grandparents home, you can feel the cosiness, the love & the excitement to see me! I make us all a brew and we gather round the kitchen table together for a good ole natter! Then its serious stuff when I get the Newspaper out and the dictionary and we hit it head on ! ......TOGETHER.

Im his eyes. For that one hour.

Hes a whizz at these crosswords, - they both are! spinning the answers out - and Im actually impressed how clever I am with them!!

Its a new routine. One we've adapted to very very well, and combined with MANY laughs inbetween!

We're a TEAM. We are simply friends that get together to keep the simple pleasures of every day life going ✨️
