Tyrosinase is one of the key enzymes involved in making melanin, the pigment responsible for brown/dark pigmentation in the skin.
Azelaic acid helps inhibit tyrosinase activity, which can slow down the production of excess melanin.
So when you’re treating pigmentation, you’re not just trying to remove the pigment that’s already there, you also want to reduce the signals and pathways that keep creating more.
That’s why azelaic acid can be such a clever ingredient for hyperpigmentation and post-inflammatory pigmentation, particularly when inflammation is also part of the picture.
Basically: less tyrosinase activity = less melanin production. 🤎
