Supporting Couple Through the Highs & Lows

Fertility challenges affect both partners, even when treatments focus primarily on one body. Here is how acupuncture aids the emotional dynamic:

Navigating Disappointment / Negative Test or Failed Cycle. Physiological Grounding: Disappointment triggers a sharp spike in cortisol and adrenaline. Acupuncture stimulates endorphin release and activates the parasympathetic nervous system ("rest and digest"), helping the body step out of shock.

A Safe Space to Process: A neutral place where tears and frustration can be expressed without the pressure of "staying positive for my partner or others."

Partner Support: Male-factor fertility issues or the emotional strain on the non-carrying partner are often overlooked.

Treating both partners helps align their coping speeds, preventing one from feeling isolated while the other grieves.

Navigating Joy & Hope
Managing Anxiety in Success: A positive pregnancy test after loss or prolonged struggle often brings immediate relief and can sometimes be followed quickly by intense fear "What if it doesn't stay?"

Early Pregnancy Protocols: First-trimester acupuncture protocols focus on stabilizing pregnancy, reducing early anxiety, alleviating morning sickness, and helping the body accept the milestone with grounded calm rather than constant worry.

One of my patients said this to me during her 5th appointment. She had suffered with severe migraines and insomnia for many years. She explained how hard it was for her, before she had acupuncture, to cope with her demanding job, daily life and ‘normal’ activities even when she was taking medication. Now she is painfree most days and has experienced deeper and restfull sleep.

She looked at me with a smile and a tear when she said those words - she really wanted me to know how much this change meant to her.

Moxa for breech position.

Turning the baby with warming a point on the little toe?

Bladder 67 - Moxa is burnt at a point at the end of the little toe. This point, when stimulated with moxa, has a powerful effect on relaxing the muscles of the uterus allowing the baby to turn.

The moxibustion is applied with a moxa stick of compressed herbs about the size of a cigar. The end of the stick is lit and the herbs start to smolder. The point is warmed on both sides for about 15 minutes. The heat that is generated radiates into the point and stimulates its actions on the uterine muscles.

Ideally treatment is started at week 34 of the pregnancy and the best results are often gained before week 37 as after this stage there is so little room for the baby to move. Moxibustion is a safe and gentle way of attempting to turn babies. Usually only one or two treatments are needed. One of our acupuncture team will apply the moxibustion and then show you how to stimulate the points at home. Your practitioner will provide you with moxa sticks to use at home.

Here are some other safe, natural techniques moms often try (always check with your doctor or midwife first!)

Pelvic Tilts & Inversions – Lying on an inclined surface or practicing gentle tilts can create space in the pelvis and help baby shift into a better position.

Prenatal Yoga
Certain yoga poses like cat cow and positioning on hands and knees and body-balancing exercises encourage optimal fetal positioning, giving your baby room to move.

Swimming & Belly Dips – The buoyancy of water relieves pressure, allowing your belly to “dip” naturally. Many moms find swimming both relaxing and effective.

Cold & Warm Compresses – Babies may respond to temperature differences! Placing a cool compress near the top of your bump and warmth near the lower belly can gently guide baby to move downward.

Every pregnancy is unique—sometimes babies turn on their own, and sometimes they need a little encouragement. The most important thing is staying calm, informed, and supported. Whether baby turns or not, modern medicine offers safe delivery options for both mom and child.

You’re doing an incredible job preparing for your baby’s arrival.

Cupping can give a deep release of tension held in the body. This ancient alternative therapy increases blood flow, relieves muscle tension and promotes healing.

It can help soften the tight fascia, the tissue surrounding the muscles, improving flexibility and range of motion.

It is one of the techniques I use for some of my patients. It can be incredibly powerful and can be used as a stand alone treatment or in combination with acupuncture.

How can acupuncture support fertility?

Acupuncture can offer a positive and beneficial treatment either to enhance the chances of natural conception or to support in the process of assisted conception. Studies in recent years suggest acupuncture can benefit fertility outcomes by: Lowering stress hormones and provide better blood flow to the ovaries and uterus, creating a stronger chance for an egg to be nourished and carried to term. The practice may also help to improve s***m production and motility in male patients.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, it's believed that qi (pronounced "chee") is the body's vital energy, flowing through channels that connect the body's surface with the internal organs. When the flow of qi becomes disrupted—through stress, illness, injury, or lifestyle factors—it may affect physical, emotional, and mental wellbeing.
Acupuncture has been used for centuries to support reproductive health. Research suggests it may have a positive role for some people trying to conceive by:

🌿 Supporting healthy blood flow to the ovaries and uterus 🌿 Helping create a favourable environment for implantation🌿 Supporting s***m quality and motility in men🌿 Reducing stress and promoting relaxation during the fertility journey

One London study (2016) involving 160 couples undergoing IVF found that couples who received acupuncture alongside treatment had a pregnancy rate of 46.2%, compared with 21.7% in those who did not receive acupuncture.
While acupuncture isn't a guarantee of pregnancy, many people choose it as a complementary therapy to support their fertility treatment and overall wellbeing. One of its most widely recognised benefits is stress reduction, helping patients feel calmer, more relaxed, and more optimistic during what can often be an emotionally demanding journey.

Every fertility journey is unique, and acupuncture can be tailored to your individual needs alongside your medical care.

“Less is more”, by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, is a minimalist philosophy emphasizing simplicity, functionality, and intentionality. It suggests that reducing excess—whether in design, lifestyle, or art—can lead to greater clarity, beauty, and impact.

Five-Element Acupuncture doesn’t chase symptoms, it helps restore the inner alignment you’ve been missing. Every treatment is different and tailored for you. Treatment progresses building upon each session. In the first few sessions I often use different acupuncture points at each appointment.

For example one acupuncture point I use a lot in clinic is Conception Vessel CV14 Great Deficiency.

This point is indicated for anxiety, fear, mental problems, hysteria, agitation, stomach issues, depression, forgetfulness and chest pain. It is said to calm the spirit and revive a person who is suffering from emotional exhaustion. It is great for when a patient is too oversensitive to external events and feels overwhelmed.

Still Not Convinced about needles?
If you’re still unsure about acupuncture, don’t worry—there are other treatment options available. Acupuncturists stimulate specific areas of the body to encourage healing, and this can be achieved in several ways. Moxibustion and Tuina massage are both effective methods for treating pain or Chinese cupping therapy or an infrared heat lamp, both of which are completely needle-free.

In Chinese medicine - Jing is traditionally linked to the Kidneys and is thought to decline naturally with age. Signs of weakened Jing might include chronic exhaustion, premature ageing, weakness, burnout, low fertility, or slow recovery.

Modern medicine does not recognise Jing as a measurable biological substance, so it’s best understood as a traditional philosophical and medical concept.

Classical texts describe it as finite. Like a candle: once the wax is gone, you can’t refill it — but you can slow the burn.

In that framework, habits like;
* Chronic late nights, missing the YIN hours when YANG recesses back into the body to replenish and recover.

* Pushing through illness, constant overstimulation with coffee, drugs or other stimulants to keep going

* Long periods of sedentary living stimulation coming only through a computer screen or smartphone the Qi stagnates, the yang destabilises. Yang moves, generates, expresses outward. When that nature is chronically suppressed it will gradually drain Jing over time.

Sleep is when restoration happens. Illness is when the body redirects energy toward recovery. Movement keeps Yang and Qi flowing. Ignoring those rhythms may keep productivity high in the short term, but often at the cost of deeper depletion underneath.

What is your body telling you?

Pain isn't random. It's a signal your body wants you to understand. That sudden pain might not be what you think. That tight muscle might not be just tight.

* Strain → muscle fiber injury (overload / sports)
* Sprain → ligament damage (joint instability)
* Spasm → sudden muscle lock (stress / fatigue)
* Cramp → intense, painful contraction (dehydration / overload)
* Atrophy → muscle shrinkage (inactivity)
* Imbalance → uneven strength → recurring pain

Pain doesn't mean stop.
It means respond correctly.
If your pain keeps coming back, feels confusing, or isn't healing the way it should.

Our bodies and emotions are constantly changing and adapting to new situations. When we are in balance, we naturally move through different stages. But sometimes something knocks us out of balance. This could be an injury, a virus, illness, loss, or more subtle shifts in relationships or work. It can also build up over time—years of ignoring small signs, pushing past your limits, until it all becomes too much.

When the body is in pain, it may be a signal of stagnation, deficiency, heat, damp or inflammation. On an emotional level, similar patterns can occur—we may feel stuck in grief, worry, hold on to repressed anger, or experience a lack of joy.

Five element acupuncture works on multiple levels. This week, I’ve seen patients with a wide range of concerns, including:

* Sciatica
* Nerve pain
* Digestive problems
* Fertility support
* Depression
* Grief support
* Knee pain
* Insomnia
* Headaches
* Neck tension
* Trauma
* Hay fever

Each person is supported with tailored techniques and treatments, which may include acupuncture needles, moxa, cupping, or gua sha.
