Humming is a powerful tool that can help you manage stress, regulate your emotions, improve heart health, and enhance your overall well-being.
A 2023 study, comparing the physiological effects of humming vs physical activity and sleep found that humming uniquely balances the body’s stress response and promotes a state of calm and equilibrium by lowering heart rate while increasing heart rate variability (a vital indicator of a healthy and responsive autonomic nervous system).
All you have to do is inhale deeply through your nose, then gently hum as you exhale, until you run out of breath.
You should notice that your exhale is longer than your inhale, which helps to lower heart rate and blood pressure, whilst the physical activity of humming stimulates the vagus nerve, which activates the parasympathetic nervous system, shifting your body into rest/digest mode.
Feel the vibration in your chest, throat, and head, and notice how the sensation travels through your body.
Continue this for 5–10 minutes, then pause for 2 minutes, noticing how your body feels.
Enjoy!
