Art is a window to the soul. No matter the form, we express ourselves though art.

This painting is in the centre for complementary medicine and tells whatever story you need.

Perhaps it reminds you of the sea foaming at a beach, perhaps it’s a nebula, the birth and death of stars. Maybe it’s an expression of sadness changing to joy in a journey.

Whatever the meaning, allowing ourselves to feel, to express and to grow through art is a gift.

Spring is finally showing herself. Blackthorn blossom, daffodils, birdsong and very occasionally sunshine.

And as the rain abates, we tend to head into the great outdoors.

If you find any niggles, aches or possible injuries then give us a call, book in online and let’s get you sorted.

Longevity - Pain!

We have all experienced some form of pain, it is one of the fundamental human experiences and there as a defence mechanism against the world. Without pain, we would very rapidly break ourselves and be in considerable danger of harm.

However, there are 2 types of pain and within that, a number of subtypes.

We have acute pain and chronic pain.

Acute is hitting your thumb with a hammer, falling over or catching your leg on a table as you walk past. It can be very distracting, but with intervention (pain killers, removing the source, time), it will improve.

Chronic is pain that hang around for weeks on end and doesn't really go away. You can often learn to live with it, but it can be draining, and in some cases isolating.

You also have peripheral and central pain, as well as visceral. Peripheral tends to be arms and legs, central tends to be more towards the middle of the body, but can also mean central nervous mediated. Our friends with neurological conditions, for example Multiple Sclerosis or Spinal Cord Injury will be all too familiar with these ones, as they are challenging to treat and challenging to live with.

Visceral pain is that organ pain, far too many people who menstruate know that one, but also anyone with a appendix, gall bladder, kidney or pancreatic problem will have experienced it as well.

If we focus on musculoskeletal chronic pain of known cause (IE if you're worried, you've already seen a medical or clinical professional), for example back pain or osteoarthritic pain, then there are things that we, as practitioners can do to help ease and resolve the pain.

Finding balance within the body, providing exercises to help strengthen and support, guiding the body away from the pain state towards a more active approach and offering changes that allow you to reframe the pain all help and can make a real difference in every day life.

Longevity - improving our health span.

Health span is measured as the time we are healthy and active. You can spend a long languishing, alive but not thriving, tottering from chair to bed to bathroom.

One of the most important elements of a good health span is healthy muscle aging. Research and study has shown that lifelong regular exercise is associated with an improved preservation of muscle mass and strength, whilst inactivity is associated with an increased risk of muscle wasting, also known as sarcopenia.

However, the type of exercise performed seems to be important. Although any is better than none, and a consistent routine of movement is fundamental to health, evidence indicates that resistance exercise is the most potent intervention for improving muscle mass, muscle strength, and health in older adults. Government health advice is to do approx. 3 hours of vigorous exercise a week at a minimum, together with resistance training, with the vigorous exercise keeping the heart healthy and the resistance training supporting and even growing the muscles.

Its never too late to start, so get going and improve your healthspan.

Are you experiencing pain, stiffness, headaches, joint problems, sports injuries or circulatory issues? Would you benefit from improved range of motion and posture?

Then we may be able to help.

Musculoskeletal therapy, based on a standard model concept of integrated anatomy, uses a wide range of techniques from multiple disciplines to work with your body, to help understand, diagnose and treat you, and your presentation.

Treatment can include soft tissue work, joint manipulation, electrotherapy, fascial and exercise modalities to relieve and resolve both the symptoms and the underlying cause.

When does "I fell over" become "the patient had a fall"?

Not as a ridiculous question as you might suppose, but often dependent on a number of controllable factors.

For me, the most important criteria is It is not age related, its independence related: can you get up on your own and did you injure anything that requires external input.

Of course, past a certain point, and with the complications of chronic health conditions, we all may need support, but the objective of the game is to try and make that as far away as possible.

One of the key tools we all have at our disposal is strength and mobility training.

The stronger we are, the more muscle we have to work with, the better our mobility, the more efficiently we can use that muscle.

You can start basic strength training at home with little more than a dining chair and a rubber band. If you have never exercised, haven't exercised for some time or have chronic health conditions, ask a professional for a starting guide, as there may be some things you should avoid.

And, if you think your mobility could benefit from improvement, give us a call. We have decades of experience, and can get you moving better, so you can live better.
