Not every headache starts in your head.

Some headaches actually begin in the neck.

These are known as cervicogenic headaches, where irritation or dysfunction of the joints, muscles and nerves in the upper cervical spine sends pain into the head.
Common signs include:

✔️ Pain that starts at the base of the skull
✔️ Headaches that spread to the temple, forehead or behind the eye
✔️ Reduced neck movement or stiffness
✔️ Headaches that are aggravated by certain neck positions or prolonged sitting

Your upper neck is packed with thousands of sensory receptors that constantly communicate with your brain. When these structures aren’t moving or functioning well, they can contribute to pain patterns that are felt as a headache.

Your brain can’t actually see your spine... it relies on the information it receives from it.

Every movement you make stimulates thousands of receptors in your joints and muscles, constantly sending information back to your brain about your body’s position, movement and control.

But what happens when you spend most of the day sitting still?

If those receptors aren’t being stimulated regularly, your brain receives far less information from that area. Over time, it may respond by making the region feel stiffer and less willing to move.

Movement isn’t just about exercising your muscles, it’s one of the ways your brain stays connected to your body.

When it comes to deciding the best approach to your care, we first need to understand what we’re working with.
We’re not interested in making assumptions about your spine or your health.
Every spine tells a story. It reflects the stresses, strains and adaptations that have developed over time.
The more we understand that story, the better informed our clinical decisions can be.

It’s an honour and a privilege when clients trust me to care for their Children’s spinal health after they see the great results for themself.

Pain is when the body’s system js in crisis mode…

…being pain free is an indication the body’s system has been well looked after by guidance and maintenance.

Occasionally a client will come to me telling me that they have sciatica and ask me how I can help it.

Well, the problem, is sciatica is a symptom and the causes can be originating from 1, 2 or multiple areas concurrently.

The cause of the sciatic pain is often not where the pain is.

Maintenance care isn’t about chasing pain. It’s about regularly checking how your spine and body are functioning, identifying small issues before they become bigger ones, and helping you stay active, mobile and doing the things you enjoy.

Will maintenance care prevent every problem? No.

But just like maintaining your car or looking after your teeth, looking after your spine gives you the best opportunity to keep moving well over the long term.

The upper cervical spine is unique when compared to the other vertebrae below. I’m talking specifically about C1 (Atlas) and C2 (Axis).

These 2 vertebrae can move independently to the rest of the spine and can account for 50% of your neck rotation.

But these joints don’t just help you move.

The muscles surrounding C1 and C2 contain thousands of sensory receptors that constantly send information to your brain about your head position, balance and movement. When these joints and muscles become irritated, tight or aren’t moving well, those signals can become altered.

For some people this may contribute to:
- Neck pain and stiffness
- Headaches
- Reduced neck movement
- A feeling of dizziness or unsteadiness
- Muscle tension through the shoulders and upper back

What are your goals?

Some people want to be seen, treated straight away, and sent on their way.

And if that’s what they’re looking for, that’s absolutely fine.
Others want a thorough consultation, objective assessment, measurable findings, a clear plan, and guidance every step of the way.

That’s how we do things.
