There is a deer somewhere in the Chilterns carrying the fastest-growing bone in the natural world.

More than a centimetre a day, up through the skull. And during the last week of July, that bone is soft. Wrapped in a living skin called velvet.

It isn’t fully grown yet. It isn’t finished. It isn’t ready to be used for anything.

And the deer is not embarrassed about that.

It doesn’t wait in the woods until the antlers are done. It isn’t behind. It isn’t failing to be a proper stag. It’s doing exactly what July asks of it, which is to be soft and growing and unfinished in broad daylight.

This is why the July full moon is called the Buck Moon. Wednesday, 29th. Low in the sky, often amber at moonrise.

To honour the full moon and the fullness of mid summer join me for twenty minutes of meditation. Sitali breath, because it’s the end of July and you’ve been simmering since May.

Then the gongs, for as long as it takes.

10 spaces, the yoga studio at Hill House.

7:30pm till 9pm

£20

Somewhere in your life there’s a thing you think you’re late for.

Don’t answer that. Just notice where you felt it when you read it.

Last week I gave my yogis a hard one, an arm movement that gets brutal fast.

I was only going to run it for four minutes instead of the full nine.

But watching them, eyes closed, faces doing all the talking, I could see the wrestle going on in there. And I realised, the whole nine minutes is the practice. Cutting it short would be handing them a different, lesser experience.

So I let it run.

Not one of them gave up.

I felt so proud watching them sit inside that struggle and come out the other side of it, still going. And the bit that actually matters, they realised the voice telling them to stop is just that - a voice.

Not them. Not in charge. They just proved it, in their own bodies, in real time.

That’s the whole of Kundalini Yoga in one movement. You are not a slave to the voice in your head. You get to decide if and when you give up.

Mondays, 7pm. Hyde Heath.

Bring your arms and your nine minutes. 😊🌟
