Exam results can feel huge to teenagers, and disappointing results can make them feel like every door has closed 🫣
It’s important that you choose your words carefully, and before you start looking at options, timetables or next steps, simply be there 🥰
Listen, let them be upset and resist the urge to tell them "everything will be fine." When emotions are high, teenagers don't need everything to be fixed immediately. They need to know they're understood and loved, regardless of what's written on a results sheet.
When your teen is ready for a practical conversation, remind them that there may be options they haven't even considered yet, such as:
👉Speaking to school or college staff
👉Requesting a review or remark where appropriate
👉Looking at alternative courses
👉Exploring apprenticeships or different routes
👉Retaking exams if needed
Most importantly, don't rush, your teenager may need time to process what they're feeling before making big decisions and one of the best things we can do as parents is offer calm and reassurance.
Remind them that there is more than one route to success and that you are there to help them find it 🤩
