'I thought it was normal to wake up stiff every morning'... this is a phrase we here often in the clinic. However there are sooooo many reasons why this is the case and also so many ways we can improve this.
1. Deconditioning & Muscle tightness:
If your job is at a desk, you travel home in the car, you sit on the sofa of an evening, then we lie in bed for 8 hours...it isn't really moving your body much. Our joints need movement to help keep them healthy, and our muscles need to be stretched and strengthened to be happy. If you're not too active why not give us a call to have a session with one of our amazing PTs?
2. Overloading tissues
On the other end of the scale, if we are working tissues past their usual point of tolerance then at night they are going to do a lot of repair. The more repair done the more inflammation is produced. Inflammation is great at healing but is quite acidic and irritates surrounding tissues. The more inflammation, the more irritation, the more stiffness/soreness in the morning. If you think you may be in this camp come and see one of our physios to assess you fully and reduce this from happening.
3. Arthritis
One of the classic signs of osteoarthritis is stiffness when still for too long such as overnight. If you think you may have osteoarthritis then resistance training has been shown to significantly reduce this stiffness and any painful episodes you may have.
