Struggling with canter transitions?

Instead of stepping under and lifting into canter, is your horse:
• Pulling themselves into the transition?
• Bracing against the contact?
• Losing rhythm or balance?
• Avoiding engagement altogether?

It's not just 'the way he goes' or 'something we need to practice'.

Before you blame behaviour, check the body.

Physiotherapy could be your next step to smooth, balanced transitions.

Not every pole down is 'naughtiness' or 'lack of scope'

Jumping requires huge coordination through the entire body. If a horse is stiff, compensating, or struggling physically, it can affect timing, technique and consistency over fences.

Some horses will:

• Flatten over fences
• Struggle more on one rein
• Become inconsistent with distances
• Start careful, then struggle later in the round

That doesn't automatically mean there's pain - but it can mean the body isn't functioning as efficiently as it could.

Physio can help identify restrictions, improve mobility and support horses through the demands of competition.

➡️ Small physical issues often show up first in performance

Are you doing your carrot stretches right?

Remember these key notes for an effective stretch:

✅ Horse's head is straight
✅ Holding the stretch for at least 5-10 seconds
✅ Doing the stretch when the muscles are warm (e.g. after exercise)

❌ Horse's head is tilted at the poll
❌ They're taking the treat straight away and not holding the stretch
❌ Doing the stretch before warming the muscles with a groom/massage, or after exercise

The temporomandibular joint plays a huge role in jaw comfort, poll mobility, and overall relaxation. Gentle TMJ release techniques can help reduce tension, support better movement, and encourage a calmer nervous system.

Notice the licking, chewing, and softening—small signs of big change ✨

One of the best parts of my job?

The release ✨

Yawning, licking and chewing are some of the lovely, rewarding signs of release in the horse during treatment - and I just love seeing it!
