Recently, we had the honour of helping with the funeral of a much-loved local rugby player, where the rugby ground itself became the setting for his farewell for the very first time.
After recently retiring and playing his final game this season, rugby had remained such a huge part of his identity and life right to the very end. So for his family, friends and teammates, there could not have been a more fitting place to celebrate him than the club and pitch that meant so much to him over the years.
For many people, a rugby club is far more than just a place to play. It becomes a second home. A place filled with friendships, memories, laughter, victories, stories and years of belonging.
Seeing people gathered pitch-side, sharing stories, smiles and memories, created something incredibly personal and deeply moving. It was not just a farewell, but a reflection of the life he lived, the friendships he built and the community he was part of.
Moments like this remind us that every life tells a different story, and sometimes the most meaningful farewells are the ones that feel truly connected to the person at the centre of them.
The family have kindly given us permission to share these photographs and story from such a special and memorable day, and we are incredibly grateful to be able to share a small part of it with our community.
