Jim Stauffer of Arizona donated his mother Doris Stauffer's body to the Biological Resource Center in Maricopa County in 2013, hoping her brain would be used for Alzheimer's research as she had suffered from the disease in her final years. He later discovered that her body had been sold to the US military for blast testing, which involved strapping it to a chair before an explosive device was detonated underneath to measure the impact on the human body when a vehicle is hit by a roadside bomb. At least 20 bodies donated to the center were sold to the army without family consent, each for approximately $5,893, and the donation center has since been shut down. Stauffer joined 32 other families in a lawsuit against the center, saying he could never fully come to terms with what happened to his mother. CNBCTime
