💭 EMDR MYTHS… BUSTED!
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) is one of the most researched therapies for trauma, yet there are still many misconceptions about it.
Let’s clear up a few of the most common myths…
❌ Myth 1: EMDR is hypnosis.
✅ Fact: You remain fully awake, aware and in control throughout every session. You can stop at any time and you’ll never be made to do or say anything you don’t want to.
────────
❌ Myth 2: You have to talk through every detail of your trauma.
✅ Fact: Unlike some therapies, EMDR doesn’t require you to repeatedly tell your story. We work with the memories, emotions and beliefs linked to the experience without needing to revisit every detail.
────────
❌ Myth 3: EMDR is just moving your eyes from side to side.
✅ Fact: The eye movements are only one small part of the therapy. EMDR follows a structured, evidence-based eight-phase approach that includes preparation, building coping skills and carefully processing memories at a pace that feels manageable.
────────
❌ Myth 4: EMDR is only for PTSD.
✅ Fact: While EMDR is highly effective for PTSD, it can also help with the effects of childhood trauma, anxiety, panic, phobias, low self-esteem, grief and many experiences that continue to affect how we think, feel and respond today.
────────
❌ Myth 5: EMDR will make you relive your trauma.
✅ Fact: The goal isn’t to retraumatise you. Therapy is carefully paced to help your brain process difficult memories so they become less emotionally overwhelming over time.
