Recently, Jennifer from our School Nursing Team was delighted to support Clever Never Goes sessions alongside PC Stewart at one of our local primary schools.

The session encouraged children to think about trusted adults, staying safe, recognising when something doesnโ€™t feel right, and knowing how and when to ask for help. These are important life skills that can help children feel more confident, safe and empowered.

This work links closely with our School Nursing role, particularly around:
โ€ข Emotional health and wellbeing
โ€ข Building resilience and healthy relationships
โ€ข Health promotion and prevention
โ€ข Supporting children and young people to stay safe

Working in partnership with schools, families and other agencies is an important part of ensuring children and young people have the knowledge, skills and support they need to thrive.

Keeping children safe is everyoneโ€™s responsibility, and early education around personal safety can play an important role in helping children recognise concerns and seek support.

A huge thank you to Police Scotland and PC Stewart for working alongside us.

Together, we can help create safer, healthier futures for our children and young people.

A helpful resource for parents & carers ๐Ÿ’›

Parenting doesnโ€™t come with a handbook, and sometimes a little advice, reassurance or a new idea can make all the difference.

BBC CBeebies Parenting is a fantastic free resource for families, offering trusted, expert-informed advice and simple activities to support childrenโ€™s development from the early years through to starting school.

It includes support and ideas around:
๐ŸŒฑ Speech, language & communication
๐Ÿ’› Emotions, behaviour & big feelings
๐Ÿงธ Learning through play
๐Ÿ˜ด Sleep & everyday routines
๐ŸŽ Healthy habits
๐ŸŽ’ Preparing for nursery and school
๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿ‘ง Supporting family life and relationships

Resources like this can help parents feel more confident in supporting their childโ€™s development, while providing simple ideas that can easily be built into everyday family life.

As School Nurses, weโ€™re always keen to share reliable resources that families can access in their own time and return to whenever they need them.

๐Ÿ“šโœจ NEW YEAR โ€ข NEW SCHOOL โ€ข NEW BEGINNINGS โœจ๐Ÿ“š

Starting a new school year can bring lots of emotions, excitement, nerves, worry and everything in between! Whether itโ€™s starting school for the first time, moving class, beginning secondary school or simply getting back into routine, transitions can take time.

A few reminders for parents and carers:

Expect tiredness โ€” school days are busy! Allow time to relax and decompress after school.

Keep questions simple โ€” try โ€œWhat made you smile today?โ€ rather than โ€œHow was school?โ€

Routine helps โ€” regular meals, bedtimes and calm mornings can make a big difference.

Listen to the little worries โ€” they can feel very big to a child.

Celebrate the small wins โ€” sometimes theyโ€™re actually the biggest ones!

And remember, you donโ€™t have to have all the answers. Our School Nursing Team is here to support children, young people and families throughout the school years.

Hereโ€™s to a happy and healthy new school year! ๐Ÿ“š๐ŸŽโœจ

Our School Nurse, Jennifer, and Wellbeing Practitioner, Karen, have been out and about meeting some of the children who will be transitioning into school this year.

During these visits, we have been discussing what they are looking forward to, any worries they may have, and who they can turn to for help and support when they start school.

Meeting the children before they begin school helps them become familiar with our team and recognise us when we are in school carrying out health screenings, delivering health and wellbeing initiatives, or providing one-to-one support through our care pathways.
We are looking forward to welcoming all of our new starters and supporting them throughout their school journey.

Welcome to Oban School Nursing Team.

We support children and young people aged 5โ€“18 attending Oban High School and its associated primary schools. Our role is to promote health, wellbeing, and positive outcomes for children, young people, and their families.

Working with schools, families, and partner services, we provide support through Scotlandโ€™s 10 School Nursing Pathways. These include mental and emotional wellbeing, healthy lifestyles, substance use, child protection, domestic abuse, youth justice, homelessness, care experienced children, young carers, and transitions.

Our aim is to ensure children and young people receive the right support at the right time, helping them stay healthy, safe, and able to reach their full potential.
