π¨ **86% of mothers start breastfeeding. Only 58% are still breastfeeding at 6 months. Why are so many families falling through the cracks?** π¨
The newly published Infant Feeding Survey 2024 has revealed something that should stop us in our tracks.
Most parents want to breastfeed. In fact, 86% of mothers initiate breastfeeding. Yet by 6 weeks, that figure has dropped to 71%, and by 6 months only 58% are still breastfeeding. Just 26% are exclusively breastfeeding at 6 months.
This isn't because parents aren't trying hard enough.
It's because breastfeeding is often treated as "natural" when in reality it's a learned skill that requires support, reassurance, education and confidence.
Too many parents leave hospital exhausted, sore, overwhelmed and wondering:
π€ Is my baby getting enough milk?
π€ Why does this hurt so much?
π€ Is this normal?
π€ Should I give up?
And too many are left searching Google at 3am when what they really need is someone by their side saying:
*"You've got this. Let's work through it together."*
This is where doulas make a difference.
As doulas, we help families prepare for breastfeeding before birth, understand normal newborn behaviour, navigate feeding challenges, build confidence and access specialist support when needed.
Because successful breastfeeding isn't about luck.
It's about being informed.
It's about feeling supported.
It's about having someone in your corner when things feel hard.
Whether you breastfeed for a day, a month or years, you deserve evidence-based support without judgment.
No parent should feel alone on their feeding journey.
π Supporting parents.
π Protecting confidence.
π Helping families thrive.
