❗Repeatedly Missing Appointments Has Consequences❗

The number of patients failing to attend booked appointments is continuing to increase, and this is having a significant impact on our ability to provide care.

In August 𝟭𝟬𝟳 appointments were not attended.
▪ 𝟲𝟮 of these were Nurse appointments including 𝟰𝟲 blood tests.
▪ 𝟭𝟵 were GP appointments.
▪ 𝟭𝟱 were with our Paramedic Practitioners or Advanced Nurse Practitioner.
▪ 𝟭𝟭 were Extended Access Appointments between 7am and 08:30am.
▪ 𝟱 were with our Mental Health Worker, Sarah Bibby.

Missed appointments waste valuable NHS resources and prevent other patients from accessing the appointments they need.

As a result, we are now taking a stricter approach to appointment non-attendance. Patients who repeatedly fail to attend appointments without informing the practice may be removed from our surgery list.

Please remember: if you cannot attend, cancel your appointment as early as possible by phoning the surgery, leaving a message on our cancellation line, emailing us or using the NHS App.

Together, we can help ensure appointments are available for everyone who needs them.

There are more than 100 types of blood cancer, including leukaemia, lymphoma and Myeloma, and every year more than 40,000 people in the UK receive a diagnosis.

Blood cancer symptoms vary depending on the type of blood cancer, and not everyone will have the same symptoms.

The most common symptoms of blood cancer include:
▪ Unexplained pain or aching in your bones or joints that interferes with your sleep or daily activities
▪ Unexplained pain, discomfort or feeling full (bloated) in your stomach area
▪ Frequent, persistent or severe infections
▪ Unexplained fever or a high temperature
▪ Unexplained weight loss
▪ Tiredness that doesn’t improve with rest or sleep
▪ Lumps or swelling anywhere on your body
▪ Drenching night sweats
▪ Paleness (pallor)
▪ Shortness of breath
▪ An unexplained rash or itchy skin anywhere on your body that doesn’t improve with treatment.

If you have any symptoms that you’re worried about, book an appointment with your GP. It’s a good idea to make a note of exactly what your symptoms are, how long you’ve had them, and if anything has changed or got worse recently.

Emergency alerts are sent by the Government to provide warnings and advice in life threatening emergencies, such as severe flooding or extreme weather.

While these alerts can be an important safety tool, unexpected notifications may create challenges for some people, including victim-survivors of domestic abuse who keep a secondary or concealed phone for safety reasons.

If you are experiencing domestic abuse and have a hidden phone, it is possible to change your device settings to turn emergency alerts off. The process varies depending on your device, but Refuge, the UK's largest specialist domestic abuse organisation, has produced a short step-by-step video explaining how to manage these settings.

If you're supporting someone affected by domestic abuse, please share this information with them so they can make informed decisions about their safety.

There are many different types of alopecia, and various medical conditions and side effects of treatments that can cause hair loss. Some of the most well-known include male or female pattern balding, chemotherapy, and the autoimmune condition ‘alopecia areata’ which causes sudden, patchy hair loss anywhere on the body, from small round patches to complete hair loss. Alopecia can affect identity, confidence and everyday life, and it can leave people feeling isolated.

Alopecia Awareness Month helps people understand that alopecia is about much more than hair loss. It aims to raise awareness and reduce the stigma of alopecia and highlight the significant emotional and psychological impact of the condition.

👉 You can find out more about the different types of Alopecia, treatments and support, as well as fundraising ideas and volunteering opportunities on the Alopecia UK website: https://www.alopecia.org.uk/

For 25 years, International Overdose Awareness Day has brought people together to remember those we’ve lost and to take action to save lives.

The truth is, we shouldn’t still need this day. But we do.

Overdose continues to affect every community. Yet it can be prevented. We know how to reduce risk and keep people safe. By speaking openly, learning from one another, and treating each other with care and respect, we build a world where fewer lives are lost.

Because while this day is still needed, it doesn’t have to be forever.

Every year on 28th August, we come together to celebrate Makaton International Awareness Day. It is a special opportunity to reflect on the power of communication and the positive impact Makaton has on people's lives around the world.

Makaton is a unique communication programme that uses symbols (pictures), signs (gestures) and speech to enable people to communicate. It supports the development of essential communication skills such as attention and listening, comprehension, memory, recall and organisation of language and expression.

Today over 100,000 children and adults, use Makaton symbols and signs. Most people start using Makaton as children then naturally stop using the signs and symbols as they no longer need them. However, some people will need to use Makaton for their whole lives.
