Celebrating 50 Years of Smile Month

It’s currently Smile Month, an annual oral health awareness campaign which runs from 11 May to 11 June.

Looking after your teeth and gums at every stage of life is important, as good oral health supports overall health wellbeing and quality of life. It is especially important that good habits start early and that parents, nurseries, and schools support children to maintain good oral health and build habits that last a lifetime. We have resources available for schools and nurseries, workforce training, support, and the opportunity to be an oral health champion for Tameside.

Our Public Health team offer free supervised toothbrushing schemes to nurseries and reception classes in Tameside. Support is available to set up supervised brushing programmes in these locations across the borough, and evidence shows that daily supervised toothbrushing in schools and nurseries over two years can significantly reduce tooth decay and help establish lifelong healthy habits.

For more oral health information and support in Tameside, head to our website

Renters Rights
Renters’ rights have changed in the UK. From 1 May 2026, new laws give private renters more security, fairer treatment, and safer homes.
Renters key rights:
• You can’t be evicted without a good legal reason
• ‘No fault’ evictions have ended
• Most tenancies are now open ended
• You can leave with 2 months’ notice
• Rent can usually only go up once a year
• You can’t be asked for more than one month’s rent upfront
• It’s illegal to refuse you because you have children or receive benefits
• You can ask to keep a pet – landlords must consider requests fairly
• Your home must be safe and free from serious problems like damp and mould
The landlord must also provide an official Renters’ Rights information sheet by 31 May 2026 (or at the start of a new tenancy). For anyone who feels pressured to leave, their home isn’t safe, or they’re unsure about their rights, we’re here to help.

Infected blood compensation - do you know someone who is eligible to claim?
The Infected Blood Compensation Authority (IBCA) runs the scheme that pays compensation to people infected and affected by HIV, hepatitis B and hepatitis C through contaminated blood or blood products.

As an arms-length body, independent of government, IBCA’s focus is to support and make it easy for people who are eligible to claim the compensation they are entitled to.

If you know someone who lives in your community, or through your local networks, who may be eligible, please encourage them to register with IBCA to make a claim.

Who is eligible to claim?

A person can claim compensation if:

they were infected by HIV, hepatitis B and hepatitis C through contaminated blood, blood products or tissue
they’re acting on behalf of an infected person who has sadly died
they're an affected person - that is the partner, parent, child, sibling or unpaid carer of someone who is or was infected
they’re acting on behalf of an affected person who sadly died after 21 May 2024 (until 31 March 2031)
There is a tool for calculating expected compensation on the IBCA website https://ibca.org.uk/estimate-your-compensation?utm_campaign=PR-CO&utm_medium=affiliate&utm_source=ntc-website

How do you make a claim?

Everyone who intends to make a claim for compensation from the Infected Blood Compensation Scheme can register with IBCA at https://ibca.org.uk/register/register-your-intent-to-claim?utm_campaign=PR-CO&utm_medium=affiliate&utm_source=ntc-website

The online registration service asks for core information such as name, contact details and the type of claim they would like to make.

This means that IBCA can contact people when they are able to start making a claim. Anybody unable to register online, or who would like help completing the registration, can call IBCA on 0141 471 8886.

Half-term Fun

Our Cultural and Library Teams have put together a fantastic programme for those with young children to enjoy over the half-term.

Families can join for free or low‑cost sessions across Tameside. This includes crafting activities with Make, Do, Play sessions, where children can get hands on to make their own tulips, reptiles, puppets, and more. There will also be Outdoor Art sessions at Portland Basin where children can come and join in with crafts using natural materials like shells and leaves.

To keep up to date with everything on offer in Tameside, see here.

Tameside Libraries are joining in too with ocean‑themed crafts, games, and activities. The Look for a Book scavenger hunt is also back for the half-term fun. See the Libraries social media page (Facebook) for more information.

The HAF offer is also back, a great way to keep children active, engaged, and well over the holidays. Spaces are limited, so book early! Find out more and register here: www.tameside.gov.uk/haf.

We want as many people as possible to make the most of the great activity programmes! So help us spread the message by sharing on social media, here.
