If like me you put on a few pounds over the Christmas break and you are carrying out those New Year resolutions of joining a gym to shed them, take just a few minutes to read this update and avoid causing yourself an injury.

Every time you exercise you should complete a thorough warm-up of CV and mobility activities that gently increase the heart rate, warm the body and increase the range of movement of the joints. This is very important as injuries can occur from a lack of warm-up.

Never be tempted to go straight back to previous exercise intensities straight away. You may have lost some of your fitness over the Christmas holidays and you need to gradually get back into your fitness regime. Start with lighter weights, less exercises, shorter and reduced intensity CV activities.

Carry out a cool down where you do a CV activity that gradually reduces in intensity followed by stretches for all the muscles you have worked.

Always listen to your body as it will tell you when you are starting to do too much - ease off if it does. If your are in any doubt about your fitness to exercise consult with me first and I can also give you advice on activities that would be appropriate.

And if you are unlucky enough to sustain an injury, immediately give me a call at The Bridgewater Clinic for some free advice on what to do.

Happy Exercising
