A little extract from my forthcoming book 'Confessions of a Yoga Teacher' - musing on Svadhaya the Niyama of self study.

My Svadhaya guides me to treat my mat as my sacred space as if there were no one else in the room, regardless of what I do or don’t do. It guides me to follow my instincts as to the type of practice I need at that point in time; sometimes it’s rigorous sometime calming. It guides me to accept that my ego is part of me and doesn’t need taming, subduing or otherwise denying it’s existence. When I approach the state of yoga there is no differentiation into the wheels and cogs of my psyche, there’s just me and my awareness of that exact yet fleeting moment. I am both infinitely flawed and infinitely perfect accepting each new breath as a thing of wonder regardless of the weather forecast, the state of my hearing or whether I move the left (or is it the right) foot first. It’s an ongoing journey and I’ve only just begun.
