Barbara’s Yoga & Pilates

Barbara’s Yoga & Pilates I am passionate about the physical, emotional and mental benefits that regular movement brings. Come and move with me and see for yourself.

Wherever you are, whatever your history, adding Yoga, Pilates or both to your week will leave you feeling better. I have always loved to exercise from the simple joy of taking a walk and connecting with nature, but my particular passion lies in the power of connecting mind, body and breath which you will find in practicing Pilates and yoga. I am a level 3 qualified Mat Pilates instructor and Yoga

Teacher and have also completed my 200 hour Yoga Teacher Training. I am registered with the Chartered Institute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity and am a Registered Yoga Teacher with Yoga Alliance. I love to share the joy that movement, breath work and meditation can bring. I have been teaching locally for a number of years and hope to do so for many more!

After last week’s very special garden Pilates and Yoga classes and a return to more seasonal temperatures it feels that normality is restored. The classes return to the Village Hall tonight and we may even want (dare I say it) to pop a jumper on in the evenings.

This led me to ponder what we mean by normal. The dictionary definition of normal is “usual, typical or standard”.. However, what is usual or typical can change. As we practice regularly, what was hard before can become easier, our range of motion can increase so our “normal” changes.

So are you ready to shift your normal? If so, why not get in touch and book you place? I still have space in both classes tonight and am now taking bookings for 7, 14 and 21 September. (There is no class next Monday due to the Bank Holiday).

If you’re interested in joining us or have any questions please email me at [email protected].

Best wishes

As we wake up today we find ourselves moving into the second half of August. In the long lazy days of summer it’s very easy to think it’s fine to take a summer break from exercise, or we can wait until September to start a new exercise habit.

A good reason not do this to was brought home to me the other night. I recently fractured my wrist, but was given rehab exercises to do right away as the bone heals. The other night I was simply too tired to do them prior to bed, so I didn’t do them. Well, I regretted this in the morning. My hand was sorer and my wrist much stiffer. Of course, I then went back to doing my exercises regularly and the missed session is now more or less forgotten. However it does prove that those seemingly minor exercises done regularly really do matter (and also that if we do have to do a week off, that’s ok too - as long as we then get right back to our routine).

So if you’ve been thinking of joining us at Watermead on Monday evenings, rather than waiting until September, why not get in touch now by emailing me at [email protected]?

I look forward to hearing from you.

This weekend I went on a mini, one-day, yoga retreat. It was nice to be the student and I deliberately chose mostly workshops that I knew only a little about so that I could experience things in a different way. It caused me to reflect on the fact that we are never “done”, there’s always room to see and feel things differently.

We may have done a Pilates move or yoga pose hundreds, or even thousands, of times, but each time is actually different. This can be, for example, how tired (or not) we are when we roll out the mat, what has come before in our day or the class, or simply our understanding of the movement itself or our body. If we are willing, each and every time, to come to our practice with an open mind, treating it as though we were doing it for the first time, we will likely experience it in a whole new way and may even learn something about ourselves.

I still have space in both Pilates and Yoga at Watermead tonight, 3 August and the following 3 weeks (10, 17 and 24 August). If you’ve been thinking of joining us, why not email me at [email protected] with any questions or to book in and see what you can feel differently?

I’m looking forward to hearing from you.

Hello everyone,

As we wake up this Monday morning we are settling into the school summer holidays and, if the weather forecast is to be believed, another spike in temperatures later this week.

This time of year can offer so much. The joy of feeling sunshine on your back as we get to spend more time outside, long days that may be full of life and energy and lazy evenings chilling with a good book. But most of us still have errands to run, jobs to go to or caring responsibilities of one type or another. That’s not a bad thing. It’s the balance in life that helps us really appreciate each and every moment (and also keeps us happy and healthy). We will be exploring the theme of balance, in all of its meanings, in both our classes tonight. I think we are going to have fun.

I am taking bookings for tonight and also for classes in August, excluding the bank holiday. For the avoidance of doubt that’s the four Mondays, 3, 10, 17, 24.

if you are interested in joining us or have any questions please do get in touch at [email protected]. I hope to hear from you soon.

Wimbledon and the World Cup may both be over, we still have another week of the Tour de France, but probably more significant for many is that this week the schools break up for the summer holidays. This means the start of busy holiday season for some (for others time to stick to the routine and wait until school is back before taking a break). Whatever this means for you, don’t forget to prioritise your health and well-being with your yoga and/or Pilates practice.

I’m taking bookings for my Pilates and Yoga classes on Monday evenings at the Watermead Village Hall over the summer from tonight until 24 August Inclusive. (31 August is a bank holiday so there will be no class in that date).

If you’re interested in joining us, or have any questions, please get in touch by emailing me at [email protected].

I hope to hear from you soon.

Greetings all. We’re very much into sports season with Wimbledon just finished, the Tour de France and of corse, most notably, the World Cup. Saturday‘s England game made me think of two things which are pertinent to what we do in class.

The footballers do not reach the level they are at overnight. It’s dedicated and consistent practice that gets them in the shape both physically and mentally they need to be in to compete at the highest level. Whilst we are clearly not attempting these feats, it is showing up for ourselves not only on the days where we can’t wait to move, but on the days when we feel tired or out of sorts, that matter. That’s the consistency that will help us to see a difference in how we feel as a whole. We rarely regret making the choice to say “yes”.

Whether you're an ardent football fan, only vaguely interested, or somewhere in between, there is no denying that on Saturday night the entire country was a community. Everyone was hoping that England would win (and cheering loudly when they did). Whilst our community is a lot quieter, we are still there for each other, getting the extra lift that coming together and moving brings, and also knowing that on the days when we cannot, we are missed.

If that isn’t encouragement enough to take just an hour (or two) for yourself and come to class, perhaps the opportunity to pause and get out of your head, is. There is still space in Pilates at 6.30 pm and Yoga at 7.45pm tonight (and for the remainder of July). Why not get in touch by emailing me at [email protected] and book your place?

Hello all, I hope you’ve had a lovely weekend and are feeling ok as we move into yet another hot spell.

Maybe you’re somebody who adores the heat and you cannot wait for the lovely sunny days. Or maybe you are a bit more like me and want to find a cool spot until the temperature drops later in the day. Either way everything seems to get amplified in the heat and tempers can fray. Luckily this week marks Global Forgiveness Day which takes place tomorrow, Tuesday, July 7th. It is an annual international event dedicated to promoting personal peace, reconciliation, and the mental health benefits of letting go of grudges. The presence we gain by keeping focus on our breath throughout our classes will help give us the necessary tools for doing so. We can then use this breath focus to keep calm in the heat as go about our week.

If you’re interested in joining us* please get in touch with me at [email protected]. There will be plenty of options available so that you can make the classes work for you.

I hope to hear from you soon.

Happy Monday everyone. I’m looking forward to tonight’s Pilates and Yoga at the Watermead Village Hall.

I think given the last week’s absolutely extraordinary weather it would be odd not to mention it in this post. We got through the week and hopefully don’t feel too bad for a (very necessary but temporary) reduction in exercise levels. Well the good news is that the temperature has now returned to a more normal level and I have a couple of lovely classes planned for tonight. All of this will leave you feeling restored and ready to face the week.

As well as tonight’s classes, both of which have space available, I am now taking bookings for all 4 Mondays in July (6, 13, 20 and 27th). I do hope you will join me for some (or even better all) of these sessions.

Please do get in touch at [email protected] to book in or if you have questions about the classes.

I hope to hear from you soon.

Happy International Day of Yoga everyone…albeit a day late. I hope you managed a little mindful breathing or other practice this weekend.

I write this at the end of a wonderful weekend immersed in learning anatomy. Learning and challenging ourselves can be uncomfortable as sometimes we have to set aside outdated but long held opinions, but this is how we grow and evolve. So it can be with our practice. We try an exercise or pose with a small variation and it can feel radically different. We might even learn something unexpected about our body.

Of course there are other reasons to modify poses and exercises so be assured that I will ensure that the classes are suitable for the extreme heat expected today.

I have space in both yoga and Pilates today and next Monday so please email me at [email protected] if you’d like to book or have any questions.

I hope to hear from you soon.
Best wishes
