New blog post! How to Use Vaginal Dilators Successfully

Many women struggle with how to use va**nal dilators successfully – so if you’re finding it difficult, you’re not alone.

And while it’s relatively easy to find information online about the physical aspects of insertion (such as angle and depth), guidance on how to approach the process mentally is just as important, arguably crucial, and far harder to come by.

Using dilators successfully isn’t just about technique. Mindset, confidence, and your overall approach play a huge role in how your body responds.

If you are like many women with vaginismus, you may feel less than enthusiastic about using dilators. They can seem clinical and are often associated with discomfort and trepidation.

Your approach may be less “Ooh, I can’t wait to see what I’m able to insert today!” and more “Before I dilate, I just need to clean the kitchen/check my phone/watch this programme.” You might even feel frustrated or resentful that you have to use them at all - which is completely understandable.

Is Vaginismus Psychological? 🤔

If you’ve ever wondered why something that feels so physical can be so deeply influenced by how you think and feel, you’re not alone.

Many women ask me this very question after months or years of feeling frustrated and let down by their bodies.

And I totally get it: Vaginismus SEEMS like a purely physical response - but actually the mind plays a huge role.

Even the expectation that pe*******on will be difficult can cause you to tense your muscles in anticipation of pain - or avoid it completely.

Although the end-product of vaginismus is physical (the pain, the “wall”, etc.), its roots are always psychological and emotional. It can come from something as simple as feeling disconnected from your va**na, or from fear of pain, failure, or the unknown. Nothing scary or deep-rooted - I promise!

These emotions cause your va**nal muscles to tense… and trying to insert anything through tightly clenched muscles will understandably hurt. Or, as many women find, you may not want to try at all.

A crucial question: Is Vaginismus Psychological??..and what the women who've beaten it say...

The most crucial thing that I want you to know about vaginismus (other than the fact that it can be treated) is that there is a HUGE psychological element to it.

Although the end-product of vaginismus is physical (the pain, the 'wall', etc.), the causes of it are psychological and emotional. And don't worry, it's nothing scary or deep-rooted!!

One tell-tale sign that your mindset isn’t where it needs to be, is that your progress with pe*******on exercises will be exceptionally slow and/or inconsistent: your pelvic floor muscles might be exercised to Olympic standard strengths, but still you feel you're nowhere near the finish line. Or you’re exasperated at even the thought of using your dilators.

The massive impact that our mindset plays in vaginismus is something that comes as a surprise to many women - and you may struggle to believe it too - after all, vaginismus SEEMS so physical!

However, recognising the psychological aspect is usually the first step towards overcoming it.

The reality is that vaginismus is driven by a variety of factors such as a disconnection or alienation from the va**na. Plus, anxiety and fear play a part: fear of the unknown, fear of failure, and fear of pain itself.
