From the conversations we had at RCO Congress in May, one theme came through consistently. How do we continue to improve screening outcomes while managing increasing demand and finite resources?

Across NHS ophthalmology and screening services, teams are balancing growing patient volumes, workforce pressures and the need for earlier detection. This is where the continual evolution of imaging technology can make a real difference.
The diagnostic solutions we provide are helping clinicians visualise more retinal information in a single examination, supporting decision-making and reducing the need for repeat imaging.

We're currently supporting multiple NHS Trusts and private opticians across the UK with Canon technology, and it's encouraging to see how different services are incorporating advanced imaging into their screening pathways.

Over the coming weeks, we'll be sharing examples of how the Canon OCT and Fundus imaging are being used in real-world NHS settings, along with interesting pathology cases and imaging insights.

A huge thank you to everyone we spoke with on Day 1 of RCO Congress 26. It was fantastic connecting with so many professionals and discussing the future of ophthalmic imaging and diagnostics.

What a successful event this year’s Royal Society of Medicine National Diabetic Eye Screening Conference has been.👏

A great location, a strong programme of talks and, most importantly, plenty of meaningful discussion around the future of diabetic eye screening and the role of advanced imaging - including the capabilities of the Canon Xephilio OCT-R1.

The conference covered four key areas shaping the future of screening and care:
👁️ Updates on the UK National Diabetic Eye Screening Programme, including uptake figures, increasing demand, workforce considerations and the continued rollout of OCT - alongside the introduction of AI-supported grading
👁️ The impact of new diabetes treatments, such as closed-loop systems and GLP-1 therapies, in reducing the incidence of diabetic retinopathy
👁️ How patients are managed following referral to Hospital Eye Services
👁️ Treatment approaches in advanced diabetic retinopathy, including laser, anti-VEGF therapy and vitrectomy

✅It’s clear that technology continues to play a vital role in improving patient pathways. At Sense Medical, we’re proud to support the rollout of OCT within screening programmes through the Canon Xephilio OCT-R1, alongside providing training and ongoing support to screening teams.

And that’s a wrap on the week and on the RSM Diabetic Eye Screening Conference 2026.

What a fantastic event it’s been. We’ve had some brilliant conversations around diabetic screening and the growing role of advanced imaging, particularly the power of the Canon Xephilio OCT-R1 in delivering the high-resolution retinal imaging needed to support fast, accurate diagnosis and treatment.

It was also a pleasure to hear Richard Bell’s talk on OCT and OCTA for maculopathy and widefield imaging. Here is a snapshot of the presentation slides featuring the imaging capabilities from our Canon OCT.
