Today, we remember the men who fought in the Third Battle of Ypres, later to become known as the Battle of Passchendaele.

The battle took place on the Ypres salient on the Western Front, in Belgium, where German and Allied armies had been deadlocked for three years. On 31st July, the British began a new offensive, attempting to break through German lines by capturing a ridge near the ruined village of Passchendaele.

After more than three months of bloody combat, the Third Battle of Ypres effectively came to an end on 6th November 1917, with a hard-won victory by British and Canadian troops at the Belgian village of Passchendaele. Around a third of a million British and Allied soldiers had been killed or wounded in some of the most horrific trench warfare of the conflict.
