“It’s Normal to Feel Nervous”

🎒 Starting Secondary School Soon? Feeling Nervous? You’re Not Alone.

For many children, the move from primary school to secondary school brings a mix of excitement and worry.

They may be wondering:
💭 Will I make new friends?
💭 What if I get lost?
💭 What if the work is harder?
💭 What if nobody likes me?

These worries are completely normal, but sometimes anxiety can become overwhelming and affect a child’s confidence and enjoyment of the summer holidays.

At Insula Wellbeing, our children’s counsellor Kerry helps young people understand their worries, build confidence, and develop practical coping strategies so they can start this new chapter feeling more prepared and positive.

Let’s help our young people look forward to September with confidence.

“I think I have no friends” is something we commonly hear in the counselling world… so I thought we would think about this a little deeper….

“Connection isn’t about quantity. It’s about feeling seen, heard, and valued.” 💙

Social media, casual conversations, and assumptions can make it seem like meaningful friendships come easily to everyone else. But many people experience periods of loneliness, isolation, or feeling disconnected — even those who appear socially confident and well-connected.

Some are trying to rebuild friendships after life changes, moving house, becoming parents, relationship breakdowns, caring responsibilities, or periods of poor mental health.

There can also be a difficult tension:

💭 We crave connection and friendship.

💭 Yet socialising can sometimes feel exhausting, overwhelming, or like another task on an already full to-do list.

If you’ve ever cancelled plans, ignored a message because you didn’t have the energy to reply, or wondered why making friends seems harder than it used to, you’re not alone. This is especially true when we’re struggling with stress, low mood, anxiety, grief, or simply the demands of everyday life.

Friendships don’t have to look a certain way to be valuable, like meeting up all the time, like messaging daily...

One meaningful conversation, a text message, or a coffee with someone who understands can be enough to remind us that we’re not alone and worth more than hundreds of acquaintances.

💙 What’s one small step you could take this week to reconnect with someone?

Beautiful rainbow on my evening walk around ‘the loop’ as my family call it. 1.5 miles! Glad I’ve done it because I would have not seen this beauty, it made me smile as I was getting rained down on! Always always there are little positives in our days… we need to look out for… 🌈 brighter days are coming…

Grief seems to be showing up a lot lately, and perhaps that feels even heavier at this time of year.

When the sun is shining (or supposed to be), holidays are being planned, and social media is full of smiling faces, there can be an unspoken pressure to feel happy, motivated, or “better.” But for many people, summer can actually magnify feelings of loss, loneliness, sadness, or emotional exhaustion.

Grief doesn’t follow seasons.
It doesn’t disappear because the weather improves, and it isn’t only about bereavement, grief can come through the loss of relationships, health, identity, routines, dreams, or different stages of life.

If you are struggling right now, a few gentle reminders may help:
☀️ Lower the pressure on yourself — you do not have to match everyone else’s energy.
🌿 Stay connected to simple routines — regular meals, rest, movement, and fresh air can help create stability when emotions feel overwhelming.
💬 Talk to someone safe — grief often grows heavier in silence.
🕊️ Allow space for both joy and sadness — it is possible to hold both at the same time.
Most importantly, be kind to yourself. Healing is rarely linear, and difficult seasons do not last forever.

✨ Night 1. Here we go.

Everything is set and we're ready to warmly welcome everyone joining for us for Thinking on Paper this evening.

Over the next four weeks, we'll be creating space to pause, reflect, explore ideas and connect through therapeutic writing in a relaxed and supportive environment.

A beautiful setting, good company and the opportunity to discover what can happen when we give ourselves permission to put thoughts onto paper.

It's not too late to join us for the remaining three weeks if you'd like to be part of the journey.
