**Summer holidays are not always as easy as they look**
The school summer holidays can bring freedom, fun and more time together, but they can also bring stress, tiredness and emotional overload.
Routines change. Children have more unstructured time. Parents may be juggling work, childcare, travel, visitors and everyone’s different needs at once.
A few things that can help make summer feel calmer:
👍Keep one or two simple daily anchors, such as regular mealtimes, time outside or a bedtime routine.
👍Build in downtime, not every day needs to be busy or exciting.
👍Talk about plans in advance, especially with children who find change difficult.
👍Watch for signs of overwhelm, such as withdrawal, irritability, sleep changes or more emotional reactions.
👍Give yourself permission to ask for support before things feel unmanageable.
At The Gap, we support children, teenagers, parents and families with anxiety, stress, emotional regulation, family communication, low confidence and more.
Sometimes the support is for the child. Sometimes it is for the parent. Sometimes the most helpful work happens with the family as a whole.
