“How do I even bring it up?” It’s the question we hear most from families — usually after weeks of rehearsing it in the car.

Three things that help:
– Pick a calm, sober moment. Not mid-argument, not mid-drink.
– Describe what you see, not what they are. “I’ve noticed you seem exhausted lately” lands where “you have a problem” bounces off.
– Ask, don’t demand. “How are you doing, really?” leaves a door open. Ultimatums close it.

You won’t say it perfectly, and you don’t need to. You just need to leave the door open, people rarely walk through it the first time.

Many of our first calls come from family members, not the person themselves. If you’d like to talk it through before you say anything at all, call us.

To everyone opening results this morning: what’s on that page is a snapshot, not a sentence. It measures one set of exams — not your worth, and not your future.

Results day is also a day worth watching how we cope, not just what we scored. Pressure like this shows up differently in every young person, anxiety that won’t switch off, sleep that won’t come, withdrawing from friends, or reaching for something to take the edge off. None of it means they’re failing; it means they’re carrying too much alone.

Parents: your calm matters more than your reaction. There will be a plan B, and you’ll find it together.

And if your family is carrying more than exam stress today, whether that’s anxiety, a behaviour that’s become a crutch, or a substance, we’re here, and we talk to worried parents every day.

Somewhere in the middle of summer, the drinks stop being occasional.

A glass with the barbecue. A few on holiday. One most evenings, because it’s warm and everyone else is. None of it looks like a problem — which is exactly why it can quietly become one.

This isn’t a lecture. Just a quiet question worth sitting with: is it still a choice, or has it become the default?

If you’ve noticed the off-days outnumbering the good ones, or you’ve been watching it happen to someone you love, it’s okay to take that seriously now, while it’s still quiet.
