Trying to understand a loved one living with Dementia

“Mum, you’ve already had your lunch.”

“No I haven’t. Nobody has given me anything to eat today.”

“Okay, Mum. How about we have a cup of tea and a little something together?”

“That would be lovely.”

Sometimes, correcting a person living with dementia can cause distress, even when we know what they are saying isn’t accurate.

They may not remember eating lunch, but the feeling of being hungry or forgotten can feel completely real to them.

A calm response, reassurance and a little distraction can make all the difference. 💚

Try to respond to the feeling behind the words, rather than proving who is right.

Today we were outside Highstone House with free bottles of water, keeping Barnet hydrated… and you lot showed up with the best energy! ☀️

From quick chats to big smiles (and a few “just grab and go” moments), it was lovely meeting so many of you.

A massive thank you to everyone who stopped by whether you stayed for a natter or just took a bottle and carried on with your day. That’s exactly what community is all about. 💚
