Suddenly the routine that kept you feeling grounded disappears. For many of us, the instinct is to cling even tighter to the plan because it feels safe… or drop it because it suddenly feels impossible. The summer holidays have a way of disrupting even the best routines. It’s easy to think you have only two choices: stick rigidly to the plan or abandon it altogether. But there’s a third option: adapt. A routine can be a wonderful anchor. It can help steady us when life feels chaotic and give us a sense of grounding, but routines are tools, not rules. They should support your life, not dictate it. Sometimes the most helpful thing you can do isn’t to push harder or tick another box. It’s to pause, check in with yourself and ask: “What do I need today?” That might still be the gym. It might be a walk. It might be rest. As the summer holidays arrive many of us feel untethered. Children are home, work patterns change, holidays interrupt our usual rhythm. Maybe this is a good time to ask yourself: What’s your anchor when life becomes unpredictable? What is one small routine that helps you feel grounded, while still interacting with the children but also allowing you the flexibility to respond to what your mind and body need?
