Dyspraxia Tips!

Everyday Organisation

Stay on top of your day with these simple organisation hacks! 🗓

Handy Tip for Staying Organised
• Use a wall planner or digital calendar for appointments.
• Set alarms for reminders (medication, meetings).
• Keep a box as a “launch pad” near the door for essentials (keys, bag).
• Review your day the night before to plan ahead.

Why it helps: Visual and auditory reminders help keep life on track and reduce stress.

Spotlight: Motor Planning (Praxis) 🧠

Dyspraxia Spotlight: Motor planning = the brain’s “how to” system. Dyspraxia can affect all aspects of motor actions, including generating the ideas, formulating a motor plan and carrying out the motor plan

✨ It can look like:
• Thinking of play ideas, creative tasks
• Learning new skills takes longer (e.g., tying laces, riding a bike) 👟
• Copying movements is tricky (PE, dance, actions to songs) 🕺
• “I know what to do, I just can’t do it” moments 😣

✅ Quick wins:
• Teach skills in tiny steps (1–2 steps at a time) 🧩
• Use same words every time (consistent cues) 🔁
• Practise little + often (2 mins daily beats 30 mins weekly) ⏱️

💛 Why it helps: Breaking tasks down reduces overwhelm and builds confidence.

FAQ - Is dyspraxia and Developmental Coordination Disorder the same thing? 🤔

Short answer: Yes… and no!

👉 DCD (Developmental Coordination Disorder) is the official medical diagnosis.
👉 Dyspraxia is the term commonly used to describe the same difficulties.

✨ In everyday practice, people often use the terms interchangeably.

What matters most:
• It’s a lifelong coordination difficulty
• It can affect much more than just movement (organisation, planning, confidence too!)

💛 Why it helps to know this: Understanding the terminology makes it easier to access the right support and services.

Signs of dyspraxia in your child - a child with dyspraxia may appear unusually clumsy, often bumping into things, tripping, or dropping objects.

Many children with dyspraxia are misunderstood for years. They are described as clumsy, messy, disorganised, or “not trying.” But what adults often see on the outside is only the tip of the iceberg.

Dyspraxia affects how the brain plans and carries out movement and tasks. Things that seem simple to others — getting dressed, organising a school bag, catching a ball, or following several steps at once — can take huge amounts of effort.

Over time, these daily struggles can chip away at confidence. Some children begin to believe they are “bad at everything,” when in reality they are working twice as hard to keep up.

Understanding the signs can help us move from frustration to support. When adults recognise what’s really going on, children can receive the patience, adjustments, and encouragement they need to thrive.

If this sounds like a child you know, you are not alone — and neither are they.

Dyspraxia Tips: Organising Your Home

A tidy space = a calmer mind! These tips make home organisation easier and less overwhelming. 🏡

Handy Tip for Home Organisation
• Use clear storage boxes so you can see what’s inside.
• Label shelves and drawers for easy access.
• Keep frequently used items at waist height to avoid bending or stretching.
• Tidy in short bursts (10 minutes) rather than long sessions.
• Have a place for everything and everything in its place.
• Don’t keep things you don’t use, are broken, or have beenreplaced.

Why it helps: Visual cues and small steps make organisation manageable and less overwhelming.
